On one side, there’s the Orthodox Jewish quarter, right across is the Arab neighborhood, and just nearby, you’ve got the Turkish community”. Once I stepped out of August and went for a walk, I saw he was spot on—the hotel really is nestled right in the middle of all these vibrant neighborhoods, in an area also known as the Green Quarter. Once I stepped out of August and went for a walk, I saw he was spot on—the hotel really is nestled right in the middle of all these vibrant neighborhoods, in an area also known as the Green Quarter. In fact, August’s founder and owner, Mouche Van Hool, had envisioned this kind of interaction from the very beginning. Reflecting on the hotel’s fifth anniversary, she says: “Bringing locals and hotel guests together is something I always love when I travel. With August, that’s exactly what I wanted to create—a space for encounters, but also a place that feels like a warm embrace.” And she’s absolutely right about that “embrace.” The moment I walked into the hotel lobby, I thought, “This place feels like a sanctuary, an oasis.” Especially when I spotted the bar to the right of the reception! It’s located in what used to be the chapel of the old monastery, and its combination of grandeur and understated simplicity is nothing short of breathtaking. Right next to it, the restaurant stretches along a long, narrow corridor beneath a sleek black steel and glass roof. I didn’t get the chance to fully experience the restaurant, curated by head chef Gerd Govaerts, but I did sit at that stunning bar, sipping on a margarita while trying the Beef Bun and North Sea Crab Salad. Both were absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. A MODERN MEDITATIVE HAVEN August opened its doors in 2019, and its design is the work of Vincent Van Duysen, the legendary architect known for his mastery of “silent luxury.” With August, he’s created what he describes as “a modern meditative haven”—a place where the spirit of historic Belgian architecture meets a sleek, modern sensibility. It’s also a love letter to craftsmanship; everything, from the cabinets to the light fixtures, is custom-made. As for the rooms... I stayed in room 10 on the second floor. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful wooden ceiling panels—perfectly preserved and full of character. They give the room a warm, chalet-like feel. Sleeping under that ceiling at night was an experience in itself—simple, cozy, and utterly peaceful.

The Paredero Hotel, which opened in 2021, has also put another little-known side of Mexico on travelers' radar, the small beach town of Todos Santos, at the far end of the Baja California peninsula below San Diego. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean coast, the Paradero describes itself as more of a landscape project with luxury suites than a hotel. They are right in their assertions. That's because all the suites overlook the meticulously landscaped gardens, where the cactus plays the starring role. Paradero's architectural and landscape design is by the Mexican design studio Polen Arquitectura de Paisaje. Inspired by the ever-changing desert, the Polen team is excited about Paradero: “The wind and the seasons constantly reshape the desert. A single movement of the wind changes the desert. We worked on a wind-inspired design without clean lines to emphasize this movement. The appearance of the desert also changes because of water and rain, albeit rarely. The color, smell, and texture of all the desert flora can change in the blink of an eye. We have used only plants native to the region to highlight this fantastic event. So these plants have grown naturally without additional water or human intervention. This way, hotel guests can experience the desert in its truest form”. Based on the idea of “water and its perceptive senses”, Poland's design team created a stream of water that flows through the hotel, leading guests to a natural oasis. Roads were built from the softest sand in the region to complement this experience and encourage guests to walk barefoot simultaneously. I think it's great! THE DESERT SHOWS ITSELF SLOWLY An idea about the desert exists: “The desert reveals everything little by little to the one who tries to discover it. There is also a special way to get there”. The same path was fallowed in the design of Paradero. Like the desert itself, which is vast and wide but made up of unique areas, the goal was to experience the desert as you walked through Paradero. In fact, the team of Poles designed the most significant part of the hotel's creation process, inspired by their travels in the desert of Baja California: “We walked on old roads, feeling the textures and enjoying each piece. We grew endemic desert species in a special greenhouse for over a year and we planted these young plants alongside many old seedlings that already exist in the area. This allowed us to combine different species at different altitudes to simulate natural growth in the desert”. Because, this is also the headquarters of the non-profit Villa Lena art foundation, which supports international artists. Offering a space for artists, writers, designers, producers, musicians and chefs to discover their own crafts, Villa Lena is also an “agriturismo” hotel. Agriturismo is a very common type of tourism in Italy, especially in Tuscany. In “agriturismo”, which brings together agriculture and tourism, you have the opportunity to stay in magnificent farmhouses in the middle of nature. These farmhouses have either vineyards or olive groves. Thus, during your stay, you can taste the farm’s own production of wines, olives and cheeses. September 2024 | TRAVEL JAMBO* ZURİ! words Onur Baştürk (*) Jambo means "hello" in Swahili I landed in Zanzibar around 3:00 a.m. after a seven-hour THY flight and entered the island via the temporary airport, which was located in an abandoned container. In the morning, I yawned on the terrace of the bungalow where I was staying at Zuri Zanzibar and it hit me: I had come to a truly exquisite place, the nature was incredible! Situated on the western Kendwa coast of the island, Zuri means "beautiful" in Swahili. It is the result of a 10-year project by Czech entrepreneur and documentary filmmaker Václav Dejčmar. Dejčmar is an interesting profile in his own right. For one thing, he owns the best-known modeling agency in Eastern Europe. He is also the founder of an algorithmic trading company and the DOX modern art center in Prague. Dejčmar summarizes his efforts to create Zuri as follows: "This place is the result of my passion for Zen, the aesthetics of nature, the beauty of simplicity and freedom from the daily routine”. A HOTEL BUILT WITH ECOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES Zuri is located on the 300-meter-long strip of white sand of Kendwa, a rare spot without huge tidal changes. With a total of 55 villas and bungalows, it's like a small village. A village where modern and traditional African design meet, of course. All the villas and bungalows are surrounded by so much vegetation that it makes you go crazy with happiness. Designed by London and Prague-based Jestico&Whiles, the bungalows and villas have a refined and uncomplicated style. There is enough comfort, no exaggeration. While building Zuri on 13 acres of land, the Jestico&Whiles team took care to act with ecological principles at every point of the process. For example, all roofs are made of “nyasi” (Tanzanian grass) or local wooden shingles. These two were chosen because they are more sustainable than the typical Makuti roof used in the region... Zuri, by the way, is the first African resort to be certified by EarthCheck, a global advisory center specializing in sustainable tourism. To achieve this, the hotel team has implemented a number of technical practices, particularly in water and waste management. For example, they source water from their own wells. They do not use the water sources of Kendwa village. They also use ozone technology (one of the first hotels in Africa to use this mechanism) to remove bacteria from the water they extract from the well. THE SECRET OF SPICES IN THE SPICE GARDEN Zanzibar is famous for its spice farms. It is a wonderful experience to go to one of these farms and eat black pepper or turmeric from the branch and see a vanilla tree. One of the biggest areas in Zuri is dedicated to the Spice Garden. This garden has ginger, turmeric, pepper, cumin and many more varieties. Those who wish can have an interactive workshop on Swahili cuisine full of spices in this garden. WHAT TO DO IN ZANZIBAR - GO TO THE ROCK: You know, the place that keeps popping up on Instagram, on a rock in the middle of the ocean. When I went there, the water under The Rock had receded. Because Zanzibar is a tidal land. The sea you saw five minutes ago can be far away in an hour. - SPEND TIME AT THE KITE BEACH: The south side of Zanzibar is a kite surfing paradise. There are kite schools side by side. - HAVE FUN AT THE FULL MOON PARTY: The most interesting party I went to in Zanzibar was the traditional party of the island which is held every full moon period. All the locals of the island flock to this party in Kendwa and they dance non-stop all night long. - SEE STONE TOWN: Stone Town, the center of Zanzibar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So you should go and see it. If you get lost in the streets of this old town, look out for the gates! These beautiful gates are a mixture of different cultures and at the same time a symbol of the wealth of the old times. Speaking of different cultures, you can sum it up like this: If you go to the Beach House, Stone Town's famous place to watch the sunset, the food options on the menu are listed as follows; Indian, Portuguese, British, African and Omani. Yan yana kite okulları var. - DOLUNAY PARTİSİNDE EĞLENİN: Zanzibar’da gittiğim en ilginç parti her dolunay dönemi yapılan adanın geleneksel partisiydi. Kendwa’da yapılan bu partiye adanın tüm lokalleri akın ediyor ve gece boyu hiç durmadan dansediyorlar. - STONE TOWN’I GÖRÜN: Zanzibar’ın merkezi Stone Town UNESCO dünya mirası listesinde. Now, years later, the Athens Riviera is buzzing once again. Leading the movement is The Ellinikon, a 6.2-million-square-meter smart city project on the site of the old airport, set to include over 1,100 new residences and Europe’s largest coastal park. MURALS BY MANENT AND PROFITIS The hotel’s front facade comes alive with a mural by local street artist Claire Manent, stretching up four stories. Manent’s work mirrors ciguë’s architectural precision, adding a whimsical “imaginary room” facing the sea. The piece takes inspiration from David Hockney paintings and vintage Côte d’Azur posters from the ’60s. Meanwhile, the pool-facing facade features a large-scale mural by Greek artist Panos Profitis, depicting purple seabirds mid-flight. CASA BIBI - PANAREA STAYING INSIDE THE COLLECTION The vision belongs to Hubert Bonnet — Belgian collector, aesthete, and founder of Fondation CAB. For more than two decades, Bonnet has pursued a singular passion: the intersection of modernist and vernacular architecture from the 1930s to the 1970s. Over the years, he quietly assembled a portfolio of extraordinary properties — from the modular Maison Prouvé in Saint-Paul-de-Vence to a sun-washed retreat in Panarea — each restored in collaboration with architects of equal renown: Marc Corbiau, Louis-Herman de Koninck, Charles Zana, Christophe Gevers, Louis Vincent, and Jean-Jacques Honegger among them. LES AILES - GENEVA Inside, the interiors speak a fluent language of form and function. Count Antonio Bolza and his wife Angelika buy Castello di Reschio, a 2700-acre estate in the wooded hills of Umbria, Italy. There are fifty ruined farmhouses and an old castle in the land. In a short amount of time, the Bolza family with five children begins to build a life in Umbria, which was not well known in those days. Years later, they decide to share this unspoiled region of the Italian countryside with similar like-minded souls who seek peace and seclusion. Benedikt, the son of the aristocratic family who studied architecture in London, also returned and joined the family operation with his vision. Ultimately, Benedict meticulously reconstructs 22 of the 50 houses in 13 years and even wins prizes in the sector. This includes Architectural Digest's title of ‘one of the top 100 architects working in the field of architecture and design’. Thus, the Reschio that everyone knows today, gradually emerges. NOT JUST A HOTEL Count Benedict Bolza is now described as 'one of the rare nobles who built his kingdom with his own hands’. Bolza continues to transform the centuries-old ruins of Castello di Reschio into exquisite residences with a team of 120 people. ‘I think luxury comes from beauty and harmony. At Reschio, we design everything around us, from the staff uniforms to the furniture in the bathroom,' Benedikt said in an interview. Benedikt is in charge of everything at Reschio and still lives on the estate with his family. Today there are different acclaimed areas in Reschio aside from the hotel, including the barn of 40 spectacular Spanish horses that Benedikt's father raised for ’dressage’. One of them is Tabaccaia, a tobacco warehouse from the 1940s, where Benedikt's architecture and design studio is located. Furniture and lighting made by local craftsmen are sold under the brand name B.B. for Reschio. SIP YOUR NEGRONI IN THE PALM COURTYARD Reschio has two interconnected courtyards within the castle where the hotel is located. The first is the Palm Courtyard, now covered in glass, with wrought iron columns and the mysterious atmosphere of an Agatha Christie novel. In fact, when you arrive at the Castello, this is the first place you should visit. Palm Court is a place where you can sip an addictive Reschio Negroni and absorb the magnificence of the castle walls from the inside. The other courtyard in the Castello is surrounded by impressive pine and cypress trees. Concerts are held here because of the excellent acoustics. CHRISTMAS MASS AND COSMIC JOURNEY Reschio is also famous for its events on special days. For example, the Christmas Mass on December 24th, held in the chapel of the Bolza family inside the walls. Or a cosmic journey for those who stay at least three days. The Cosmic Journey has a very full schedule, from stargazing with the astronomer to yoga sessions. And the restaurants... Ristorante Al Castello is famous for its beautiful sunsets. Breakfast is served here. In the evening, traditional Italian specialties are served with ingredients from the land. Ailla was originally a mansion before being transformed into a hotel. What changes were made during this transformation? Before becoming a hotel, AILLA was a meticulously designed mansion seamlessly integrated with nature. For the 2024 season, we reimagined it as a sophisticated luxury hotel. We blended minimalism with an Aegean-inspired interior design concept. The property now features 13 uniquely designed rooms, ranging from 35 to 92 square meters, including sea-view rooms and swim-up suites. We also transformed the estate's magnificent 18,000-square-meter garden into a serene haven with an infinity pool and sunbathing areas, designed to offer guests a romantic and unforgettable experience. August 2024 | Travel TURKISH BELOW PATMOS GUIDE words Onur Baştürk CHORA In this beautiful village around the historic St. John's Monastery, you should first have dinner at Vaggelis. The beef ragu is very good, but the service team at Vaggelis is very snobbish and reservations are very problematic. Your options for the later hours are both close together and very entertaining: Stoa, Thalami, Astivi and Pougki. In fact, most people go to the Casbah after socializing at the Stoa. GRIKOS The favorite of the Grikos bay is of course the Patmos Aktis Hotel. The hotel, which stands out for its elegant, sophisticated and simple architectural design, has 56 rooms. All rooms and suites are very spacious. Be sure to swim at the Patmos Aktis beach and dine at the Plefsis Tavern. Petra Bay, just in front of Patmos Aktis, catches the eye with the beauty of its sea. There is a shabby bar-restaurant here. But be careful, the toilets are terrible! Plaki beach on the south side of Petra is the favorite of nudists. SKALA The biggest village on the island. Long-time vacationers and "hangovers" all meet at Houston in the square and have brunch. The Patmians is another social gathering place right next to Houston. It is essential to go to Ginger and Kasbah late at night. Kasbah, in particular, is famous for its after-parties that start after 3 a.m. Benetos, in the quiet bay of Sapsila, just outside Skala, is a popular 14-table restaurant opened by Susan Matthaiou in the summer of '97. Reservations by phone. Benetos also has a restaurant in Chora. KAMPOS At the far end of this region is a lovely bay, Geranos (Livadi Geranou). Geranos is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. In Kampos Bay, our favorites are two different places: The first one is a beach club, Atmos. More comfortable and stylish. The other one is more bohemian, Sea Sun. The restaurant on Lampi Beach is one of our favorites for lunch. This restaurant serves fresh seafood and you should try the lobster noodles. PSILI AMMOS This is probably one of the most difficult places to reach on the island. You reach at a certain point with your car or motorcycle, the rest is a 40-minute walk! What awaits you when you reach Psili Ammos by passing the hills is a beautiful beach, a sea often wavy, and a cute restaurant with especially great french fries and meatballs. LEFKES There is a secret paradise where everyone goes at sunset. It's called Lefkes. On this beach there's a bar made of caravans. They only serve ouzo and wine. And fries and calamari! But when you see the sunset, you don't want anything else. One warning: There are no toilets here. You should come accordingly. Uzun süre tatil yapanlar ve ‘geceden kalma’ olanların hepsi meydandaki Houston’da buluşup geç kahvaltı yapıyor. The Patmians ise hemen Houston’un yanında bir başka sosyalleşme mekanı. Gece geç saatlerde Ginger ve Kasbah’a gitmek elzem. Özellikle Kasbah gece 03.00’dan sonra başlayan ‘after’ partileriyle ünlü. Skala’nın biraz dışında, Sapsila isimli sakin koyda konuşlanan Benetos ise Susan Matthaiou’nun ’97 yazında açtığı 14 masalık popüler bir restoran. Rezervasyonu telefonla yapıyorlar. Bu arada Benetos’un bir de Chora’da restoranı var. KAMPOS Bu bölgenin en ucunda nefis bir koy var, Geranos (Livadi Geranou). Geranos adanın en güzel denizine sahip plajlardan biri.
