Every day, Alexander Campbell showcases the beauty of his bouquets to his TikTok and Instagram followers, leaving no room for doubt about his talent. From an early age, he learned to appreciate the beauty of flowers while spending time with his grandmother. After deciding to turn his passion into a career, he enrolled in a three-year program at the London Flower School. Perhaps due to his love for the sun, he later moved to Madrid. Here, his days are spent creating stunning bouquets for clients and followers, teaching workshops on the art of floristry, meditating, and building his brand, AC Flower Studio. But don’t just glance at his extraordinary bouquets; they may carry hidden messages through the language of flowers, or "floriography," much like in Victorian England. According to Alexander, flowers have their own language, and what they convey is certainly worth noting—just like the stories Alexander tells. Was working with flowers or plants always your dream job? Not always. I’ve always loved flowers, and they’ve always played an important role in my life. A few years ago, I started searching for who I was and where I wanted to go in life. At that point, I decided to take my passion for flowers more seriously, which eventually turned into my full-time profession. How do you define your profession? Florist or floral designer? Florist or floral designer! Labels don’t really matter much to me. A MEDITATIVE BUBBLE How would you describe your relationship with plants and flowers? It’s very special. Growing up, flowers and gardens were always significant to me. Later on, they became a way for me to understand who I was and what I wanted to do with my life. Flowers also help my mental health because they allow me to enter a meditative “bubble” where my worries and struggles simply fade away. Why are you in Spain right now? I’ve always been truly happy in Spain, and that’s why I’m here now. I first came to Spain when I was 15 to stay with a Spanish family, and ever since that experience, it’s been a very special place for me. Can you name two flowers that, in your opinion, should never be in the same bouquet? Honestly, that’s impossible! I believe that with enough effort, anything can go together. What are the unique qualities that make you special? I can’t answer that! But I always strive to work authentically and with good intentions. If you work authentically, you eventually become unique over time. You must have a favorite flower or flowers… I get asked this question a lot, and it’s really hard to answer. There are so many different flowers out there that I can’t choose just one or two. My favorites change almost weekly. However, there are some I consistently use in my work—hydrangeas, statice, and roses are among my staples.

I had signed up for a weeklong program of Panchakarma — Ayurveda’s most powerful detox method — and the anticipation was running high. Let me say this right away: the moment I stepped into Oneworld Ayurveda in Ubud, I felt as though I had crossed into another dimension. It was as if the entire world around me had suddenly vanished. What came next? Let’s begin… THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY “Living in balance is the key to happiness, and that’s what I aim to offer,” says Claude Chouinard, founder of Oneworld Ayurveda. His path, however, was far from ordinary. After a successful career in Canada, Claude left everything behind in 1992 to embark on what was meant to be a one-year spiritual journey through Southeast Asia and India. That one year stretched into eight — years of deep inner exploration that profoundly transformed his view of life. Along the way, he discovered Ayurveda, yoga, and Eastern healing traditions. THE INVISIBLE LINK TO MY INNER TURBULENCE My very first day was a challenge on its own. My body had to adapt not only to a new living space but also to the humidity and the long, sudden rains in the middle of Bali’s lush forests. That first afternoon, during my consultation with Ayurveda gynecologist Dr. Resmi V. Rajagobal (BAMS), my body type, diet, and Ayurvedic supplements were determined. I turned out to be 50% Vata, 27% Kapha, and 23% Pitta. Flipping through the beautifully prepared booklet we were given, I stopped at the pages describing Vata traits and imbalances. Every word mirrored the silent struggles I had carried in daily life — insomnia, waking in the night and being unable to fall back asleep, and much more. For the first time, I could see the invisible link between my inner restlessness and my outer experiences. That’s how my journey began. CLEAR OUTLINES OF THE DAYS Each morning began at 6:00 a.m. with the gentle sounds of meditation bowls. At 6:30, a gong resonated throughout the property, reminding everyone that yoga was about to start. The rest of the day unfolded with nourishing vegetarian meals, toxin-releasing massage therapies, and treatments that left me feeling deeply renewed. Add to that attentive doctor consultations and another round of wholesome, flavorful dining, and every day flowed in a fulfilling rhythm of wellness — from sunrise to sunset. Meals could be ordered to the room, enjoyed on the terrace, or shared with other guests in communal spaces. On some evenings, I chose to have dinner alone in my room, surrounded by the Bali jungle. QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW WE LIVE The experts at Oneworld Ayurveda do more than provide a physically fulfilling program. They encourage you to think outwardly about Western health practices and inwardly about the way you live outside this sanctuary. For me, the realization was simple yet profound: healing doesn’t always come from adding more to your life. Sometimes, it begins with stopping, letting go, and allowing yourself to rest. By the end of my seven-day journey, I felt profoundly lighter — not just in body, but in spirit. I returned home not only with glowing skin and a calmer mind, but with a renewed awareness of how balance can be lived. And with the conviction that everyone should experience this at least once — to rebalance themselves and to recognize how modern life has thrown our doshas off course.

June 2024 | Design & Interiors TURKISH BELOW SHADES of WHITE words Alp Tekin photos Alena Cherepanova T he two most important features of this apartment in Limassol, designed by Natalia Maslova, are the large terrace with stunning sea views and the natural light. In fact, the design of the house has been created accordingly. The colors are natural and calm, such as light sandy tones and the color of sun-baked grass. The backgrounds are mostly white and the textiles are in shades of white, especially linen. The main elements of the design using natural materials are ceramic granite, marble and wooden parquet. The natural wood texture in the furniture gives a sense of comfort, while the travertine is reminiscent of the stones from ancient excavations commonly found on the island. DECORATIVE TRICKS Natalia Maslova points out the following detail about the design of the house: “Our main and favorite approach in interior design is mix & match. Here, we combined items from different eras and art, ensuring a unified, cohesive image of the project. The lifestyle of the owners influenced the appearance of items from around the world in the interior: vintage from London, design icons, contemporary art pieces, and art objects from various countries”. Interesting wall panels in the dining room were custom-made by the British duo Vezzini & Chen, in a composition called Water & Sand, which is very symbolic. A ceramic composition named Shades of White (which became the unofficial name of the entire project) in the bedroom was also custom-made. December 27, 2025 | DESIGN & INTERIORS a CALM, MATERIAL-DRIVEN HOME in DUBAI words YUZU Editorial interior design Amna Chaudhry Interiors photos Casa Mia Visuals production Karine Monié Inspired by autumnal tones of rust, red, and beige, this Dubai family home reflects a quiet balance between European urban elegance and Mediterranean ease. Designed by its owner, Amna Chaudhry, the house was the first project she completed for her own family after launching her interior design studio—an opportunity to translate instinct, experience, and restraint into lived space. STRONG BONES AS A STARTING POINT “This is our personal home,” she says. “From the start, we were looking for a property with strong architectural bones that we could renovate and truly make our own.” After exploring several neighbourhoods, it was this particular house in Green Community West that stood out. “I saw a level of potential in the floor plan that felt rare in Dubai, and I knew we could transform it into something special for our family.” Built in 2008, the Spanish Revival–style bungalow offered a clear architectural framework: a terracotta-tiled roof, stucco exterior, and an arched front loggia that immediately set the tone. Rather than overriding these features, the interior responds to them. Arches and softened curves appear throughout the house, echoing the exterior and creating a sense of continuity between inside and out. “I’ve always been drawn to the timeless elegance of Parisian interiors and the character of classic New York brownstones,” Amna explains. “At the same time, we wanted the home to feel appropriate for Dubai’s climate, which is why Mediterranean houses became an important reference—especially in terms of materials and a softer, more relaxed palette.” Two early design decisions shaped much of what followed. Breccia Capraia marble was selected for the kitchen, its cream base and expressive veining becoming a visual anchor across the home. Alongside it, an ILVE range introduced a slightly antique note. “The range brought a sense of age,” she says, “which naturally led us toward incorporating vintage pieces throughout the house.” Together, these elements established a balance between softness and boldness that informed the wider design language. LIGHT, TONE, AND ATMOSPHERE The colour palette remains restrained but expressive. Warm whites dominate the main living areas, allowing light to move freely through the space. “We wanted these rooms to feel open and airy,” says Amna. In contrast, darker tones appear in more enclosed areas such as the pantry and powder room. “Those spaces receive less daylight, so we used deeper colours to create a moodier, more intimate atmosphere.” In the kitchen, the decision to move away from an all-white scheme was deliberate. “The space felt too large and bright,” she notes. Deep navy cabinetry grounds the room, drawing directly from the tones of the Breccia Capraia marble used on the countertops and backsplash. Throughout the home, warmer hues—beige, rust, and red—appear in furniture and artwork. “These are colours I naturally gravitate toward,” Amna says. “I grew up in New York, and autumn has always been my favourite season. That palette feels familiar and personal to me.” CRAFT AS A QUIET CONSTANT Craftsmanship was central to the project, though not without its challenges. “The finishes and detailing we envisioned weren’t very common in Dubai at the time,” she explains. The team deliberately avoided anything that felt overly new or slick, which often meant working closely with artisans to achieve the right result. Custom millwork profiles, marble detailing, brass inlay herringbone flooring, and wall mouldings all required careful guidance. In some cases, elements were produced specifically for the house, including bespoke tiles for the checkered foyer floor. Natural materials—marble, linen, wood, and unlacquered brass—are used throughout, chosen for how they age over time. “Natural finishes develop character,” she says. “They tell a story as they’re lived with.” The result is a home shaped not by trends, but by intention: composed, warm, and quietly expressive—a personal space where architecture, material, and daily life are held in careful balance.

Our table was set in the Sala Blu under the fresco by Cesarra Rotta. It seems like just a white fish fillet, a light sauce with black caviar and literally a few sprigs of dill and voila, magic happened. And really, why complicate it? The basis of a masterpiece is simplicity. The most important thing is the taste of the dish. Tohumlar, fideler, çiçekler ve hayvanlara düşkünlüğümde onun doğa sevgisinin payı büyük. Farklı fidanlıklardan fideler arar, gittiği seyahatlerden tohum ve yaprak toplayıp onları üretmeye çalışırdı. Toprağı ve toprakla oyalanmayı çok severdi. Kendi evime geçtiğim ilk gençlik yıllarımdan beri yaşam alanlarımda ben de bitkilere sıkça yer verdim. Yaşadığım mekanları seçerken yeşil her zaman tercih ve önceliğim oldu. Yani deniz manzaralı ev mi yoksa yeşillikler arasında bir ev mi diye sorulsa, tercihim hep yeşilden yana olur. - Evde daha çok büyük ve geniş yapraklı bitki çeşitlerini seviyorum. 60’lar ruhunu yaşatan deve tabanı, kauçuk, kaktüs ve fil kulağı gibi. Onlarla özlediğimiz estetiği, yeşile özgü stili, samimiyet ve sıcaklığı yakalıyorum. - Başka ülkelerden bitki taşıma hikâyem çok var. Mutlaka elimde nemli pamuğa sarılmış bir dalla dönerim! Özellikle de İtalya seyahatlerinden. - Aldığım her bitkiyi Google’lıyorum. İhtiyaçlarını ve bakımını hemen öğrenmeye çalışıyorum. Bakması değil, ama bitler ve böceklerle savaşması zor oluyor genelde. Bir bitki öldüğünde ise bir çıplaklık, boşluk hissi kaplıyor evi. Hatta zamanla özlüyorum. Özellikle olduğu yerle özdeşleşmiş, oraya özel bir duygu katmış bitkiler böyle hissettiriyor. - Baharın gelişi benim için önemli. Ömerli’deki evimde 80 metrekarelik, bahçe gibi bir balkonum var. Orası her yıl daha da yeşillenip güzelleşiyor. - Genelde bana bir duyguyu hissettiren bitkiyi seçiyorum. Bazıları özgürlüğü bazıları romantizmi çağrıştırıyor. Bazen çekingen, bazen arsız ve deli dolu olabiliyorlar… Ama dış mekan bitkisi seçerken iklim şartlarına uygun endemik bitkileri seçmeye gayret ediyorum. GÜLİN ÖZALP (Restoran sahibi, işletmeci) “Ficus’um tam 19 yıldır bizimle. Evlendiğimizde almıştık” - Bitkilere olan sevgi ve ilgim çocuklukta başladı. Beni yakından tanıyanların çok iyi bildiği gibi, doğada olmayı fazlasıyla seven biriyim. Ancak şehirde yaşadığım için her zaman doğanın içinde olamıyorum. Ben de evimde kendi yeşil alanımı yaratmak istedim. O yüzden evimde bolca bitki yetiştiriyorum. İrili ufaklı 30 civarı bitkim var. - Evde yetiştirmekten en zevk aldığım bitki Monstera (Deve Tabanı). Çünkü sürekli yeni yaprakları çıkıyor. Yenilenip şekil değiştiriyor. - ‘Ficus’um ise 19 yıldır bizimle! İlk evlendiğimizde almıştık. Bazen yaprakları dökülüyor, sararıyor ama bizi hiç bırakmıyor. Aldığımızda ince, uzun bir bitkiydi. Şimdi oldukça genişledi. - Bali’den Coconut Palm taşımışlığım var, ama bir yıl sonra beni terk etti maalesef. - Benim için bakması en zor bitki Bonzai. Bana biraz nazlı geliyor. - Bir bitkiyi yaşatamadığım zaman çok üzülüyorum. Çünkü bir canlı olarak ilgi gösterip onunla bağ kuruyorum. Neyse ki zamanla bitkilerin neye ihtiyacı olduğu konusunda daha çok bilgi sahibi oldum. ECEM USLU DEMİR (Dijital İçerik Üretici) “Ficus Lyrata’ya sahip olmak için çok bekledim” - Bitki sevgimin tutkuya dönüşmesi ilk kızıma hamileliğimin son haftalarında, doğum iznine ayrıldığım zaman başladı. Normal doğumu beklediğim için 37. haftadan 43. haftaya kadar hep evdeydim. Evde oturacak biri asla değilim. Bu yüzden kendimi botanik bahçelerine, seralara saldım. Sonra iş yavaş yavaş bitki almaya dönüştü. Daha da ileri giderek her gün bitki almaya başladım. Şu an toplam 83 bitki var evimde. - Ficus Lyrata’ya sahip olmak için çok bekledim. Çünkü aradığım bir formu vardı. Sabırla bekledim ve sonunda tam hayal ettiğim gibi olanı buldum. İşte bu yüzden gördüğümde beni en çok mutlu eden bitkim Ficus Lyrata. - İlk aldığım bitki Monstera’ydı ve aldığımda ufacıktı. Şimdi kocaman oldu. Evin en gösterişli bitkisi haline dönüştü. Benim için yeri ayrı, çünkü en güzel yetiştirdiğim bitki. - Hem acemilik hem de yanlış toprak kullanımı ve uygun ortam sağlayamama gibi nedenlerden dolayı Pilea’yı yetiştirirken çok fazla zorlandım. Neyse ki şimdilerde onun da üstesinden geldiğimi düşünüyorum. - Bir tane Ficus Benjamin çok istiyorum, ama korkuyorum da! Benim gözümde en nazlı bitki. Her tepkisini yaprak dökerek vermesi gerçekten gözümü korkutuyor. Ama yakında alacağım ilk bitki o olacak. MURAT SÜTER (Kreatif Direktör) “En sevdiklerim körpe ve parlak gözüken yeşillikler” - Bitkilerin tutku haline gelmesi 15 yıl önce Nişantaşı’ndan Beykoz’a taşınma kararımla beraber başladı sanırım. Penceremden bakınca gördüğüm şey uçsuz bucaksız bir orman olunca, bu yeşilliği evin içine de sokma isteği kaçınılmaz oldu. - En sevdiğim bitkilerim körpe ve parlak gözüken yeşillikler. Zamia Zamioculcas, Monstera, Asparagus (Kuşkonmaz), Ficus Elastica (Kauçuk), Calathea Orbifolia ve Marantha. Genel olarak tüm kaktüs ve sukulentleri de severim. - Chinese Coin Plant’le (Pilea Peperomioides) ilk olarak Hong Kong’ta tanışmış, küçük bir saksıyla İstanbul’a dönmüştüm! Minik yaprakları olan bitki, dikildiği saksının ebadına göre çeşitli yaprak boyutlarıyla kendini göstermeye devam etti. Hong Kong’tan getirdiğim ise hâla aynı minik boyutuyla yaşamaya devam ediyor. - Yetiştirmekte zorlandığım bir bitki olmadı. Ama ağaçlara gelirsek, evimin önünde 10 yıl önce diktiğim üç adet mimoza ağacı beni en çok zorlayanlar. O kadar çok seviyorum ki, her kar yağdığında iki-üç saatte bir dallarını silkiyorum. Artık insanlar sadece gezip görmek değil, deneyim de yaşamak istiyor. Doğa ve bu bölgede olan canlı yayla kültürü bu deneyimi fazlasıyla sağlıyor. Bazı yaylalarda olduğu gibi Tatskeri Yaylası’nda ahşap dışında bir yapıya izin vermiyorlar. Zaten ulaşımı ne kadar zorsa, yayla o kadar bakir kalmış oluyor. Özellikle Ayder’in doğusunda kalan yaylalar bu konuda daha şanslı ya da 2000 metrenin üzerinde kalan yaylalar. Mesela 2400 metre yükseklikteki Koç Düzü Yaylası. Bu yaylanın hemen önünde Adalı Göl var. İçinde yüzen bitki adalarıyla bölgede tek olma özelliğine sahip. Bu yüzen adacıkların üzerine çıkılabiliyor. O gölün hemen üzerinde adını bizim koyduğumuz Cennet Cehennem Tepesi var. 2800 metredeki Lelvan Gölü Geçidi’nden ise Altıparmak, Kaçkar ve Marsis dağlarıyla, yaylaları, hatta denizi görmek bile mümkün. SONBAHARI ÖNERİYORUZ Bölgeyi tam anlamıyla yaşamak için ne zaman gelmeli? Aslında en güzel sezon sonbahar. “Karadeniz sonbaharda çok yağmurlu olur” algısından dolayı maalesef herkes temmuz ve ağustos aylarını tercih ediyor. Ama geçmiş yılların istatistiklerine baktığımızda temmuz ve ağustosun sonbahara göre çok daha fazla yağmurlu olduğunu rahatça söyleyebiliriz. Yani biz sonbaharı şiddetle öneriyoruz. Nasıl bir hizmet ve program sunuyorsunuz? 12 adet farklı turumuz var. Bunların yanında ailelere, arkadaş gruplarına, şirketlere kapalı turlar düzenliyoruz. Turlar grupların isteği doğrultusunda sonsuz seçenekte olabilir. Yürüyüşlü, yürüyüşsüz, kamplı ya da otelli, yayla evi konaklamalı… Karadenizli olmak işinizi kolaylaştırıyor mu? Evet, Karadenizli olmak büyük avantaj. Bukla Tur’un operasyonları bu bölgede oldukça oturmuş durumda. Şöföründen oteline, rehberinden restoranına hizmet aldığımız yerlerden hizmet verdiğimiz alanlara kadar her şey bir düzen içinde. Herkes ne yapacağını biliyor. Karadeniz zor bir bölge. Hem lojistik hem de insanı anlamında. Eğer insanını tanımıyor ve idare etmesini bilmiyorsanız, bu bölgede başarı oranınız çok düşük. ARAPLAR OLMADIĞI İÇİN KARADENİZ GÖZDE OLACAK Bu sezon Nordic Otel cephesinde neler olacak? Bu sezon butik tur ve butik otellerin yıldızı parlayacak. Bu demek değil ki bir patlama bekliyoruz. Evet, binamız eskiden okulmuş. 1940’lı yıllarda Mollaveyis Köyü İlkokulu olarak köylüler tarafından yapılmış. Hem arazisi hem bina köylüler tarafından bağışlandı. 1980’lere kadar hizmet veren okul, nüfusun gurbete gitmesi ve eğitim yaşındaki çocuğun kalmaması nedeniyle köy muhtarlığına devredilmiş. 2015 yılında Bukla Tur olarak devralıp onardık. Oldukça bakımsız olan, çatısı yıkılan ve metruk durumda olan okulu dış cephesini bozmadan yeniden inşa ettik. İnşa sırasında çıkan masaları, sıraları, ahşapları, dolapları ve kapıları tadilatta ve çevre düzeni sırasında yeniden değerlendirmeye çalıştık. Bu yüzden yer yer okulla ilgili unsurlara rastlamanız mümkün :) Hangi aylar açıksınız? Bugüne kadar nisan-kasım ayları arasında açık tutuyorduk. June 2024 | Design & Interiors turkish below TROPICAL MODERNISM MEETS URBAN AUNT STYLE words Onur Baştürk photos Nicole Franzen styling Paige Wassel J osh Evan founded a boutique furniture and design company in Brooklyn after working for 15 years in the fashion industry. Michael Edward worked as a project architect in the design and management of high-end residential and commercial projects. In 2019, Josh and Michael combined forces and founded New York-based architecture and interior design office Evan Edward. “Josh was in the fashion industry, but he fell in love with buying furniture from auctions and restoring them,” the partners tell those days. “When Josh’s auction furniture started to turn into special pieces, he started to get opinion from Michael and things began to progress”. Josh and Michael describe their design style as ‘urban aunt’. Remember; one of the design trends of 2023 was ’Coastal Grandmother‘, a tribute to the mature and timeless style of rustic open kitchens, white sheets and fresh flowers. The style that dominates 2024 - with the viral contribution of TikTok - is the cool urban aunt style. WHAT DOES THE URBAN AUNT STYLE LOOK LIKE? So, what is urban aunt? First of all, this aunt is usually single and does not have a child. Imagine the general design codes of her apartment as follows: Open brick walls, wooden beams (or veneers), rug-covered floors, modern and vintage furniture used together, comfortable corners created for warm conversations, a home bar with antique liquor bottles and glasses, and supporting actors with different textures: layered cushions, covers and fluffy carpets with fur... Josh and Michael describe their urban aunt as follows: “Our urban aunt is an artist. She loves traveling for adventure and watching concerts. She has a strong point of view. She is so cool and dynamic. And so is her husband!” CALMER, MODERN AND TROPICAL Evan Edward’s Biscayne, Miami project is also inspired by “Urban Aunt”, but this time quieter, modern, and naturally tropical. The color palette consists of creamy and sandy beach tones. Josh and Michael explain the atmosphere of this house as: “This project is salutatory to mid-century tropical modernism and European decor… We love that Geoffrey Bawa, one of the most inspirational Asian architects, uses a simple palette of materials to create a wider natural context in his projects. We wanted all the spaces we designed in this house to feel like they blurred the same line. For example, creating a garden for the back of the bar on the stairs or using the natural form of the Pandanus tree just outside the family room in the fabric choices of the family room”. PARIS IS OUR NEW MUSE What are the difficult and easy aspects of working as a pair? There are no challenges whatsoever, everything is as smooth as butter at all times. Everyone has strengths that get utilized to their full capacity in the seamless process of design that we have mastered here at Evan Edward. What are the cities and fashion brands that inspire you the most? We were both recently in Paris shopping for a client, so I guess Paris is our new muse again. We’ve both traveled extensively and continue to do so, there’s no place we’ve been that hasn’t influenced our vision. We feel the same way about fashion, we know how difficult it is to see a design manifest in the world and we are impressed by so many things that are put out there. We have diverse and eclectic tastes and there is a design to solve every problem.. Is there a material you always use in your projects? Exquisite taste and wherewithal! January 2024 | Design & Interiors english below G a m F r a t e s i POETRY, STORY AND WOOD words Onur Baştürk 1840’lar… Michael Thonet ahşabı sıcak buharla şekillendirerek kavisli, zarif, ahşap olması nedeniyle hem güçlü hem de gayet hafif bir mobilya ortaya çıkardı. Bu yeni ürün dönemin ağır tasarımlarını bir anda geri plana attı ve o noktadan sonra Michael Thonet’nin ilerleyişini kimse durduramadı. Özellikle de bir ikon haline gelen No.14 sandalyesi sayesinde. Bugün Michael Thonet’nin zarif ahşap geleneği modern dokunuşlarla yaşamaya devam ediyor. Çünkü Gebrüder Thonet Vienna (GTV) markası, uluslararası sahnenin önde gelen tasarımcılarıyla iş birliği yaparak bu yüzyılın ruhuna uygun koleksiyonlar ortaya çıkarıyor. O tasarımcılardan biri de GamFratesi Studio. Danimarkalı Stine Gam ve İtalyan Enrico Fratesi’nin 2006’da kurduğu stüdyonun tasarım anlayışı gelenek ve yenilenmenin birleşmesi üzerine kurulu. ALLEGORY DESK’İN YAPIMI KARMAŞIKTI Hayranı olduğum ‘Allegory Desk’ tasarımıyla ilgili aklınızdan geçen alegoriyi merak ediyorum. Gerçekten bu tasarıma yüklediğiniz başka anlamlar var mı yoksa bu sadece dikkat çekmesi için konulmuş bir isim mi? Aslında “Allegory Desk”in yaratım ve yapım aşaması oldukça karmaşıktı! Ama şu kesin: Bir şiir ve hikâyeyle bağlantısı olan bir masa tasarlamak istiyorduk. Bu öyle bir hikâye olmalıydı ki, tamamen kendiliğinden gerçekleşmeliydi. “Alegori” de edebi, büyük, karmaşık fikirleri ulaşılabilir bir şekilde ifade etmek için kullanılan hikâye ya da görüntü anlamına geliyor. It was curved, elegant at the same time robust and yet light. This new product pushed the bulky designs of the time into the background, and no one could stop Michael Thonet’s growth after that moment. The No.14 chair, in particular, has become an icon and helped him with this growth. Today, Michael Thonet’s elegant wooden furniture legacy goes on with modern accents, thanks to the Gebrüder Thonet Vienna (GTV) brand’s collaboration with top worldwide designers to develop collections in line with the spirit of the twenty-first century. GamFratesi Studio is among these designers. The design approach of the company, created in 2006 by Danish Stine Gam and Italian Enrico Fratesi, is focused on a blend of history and renewal. Stine and Enrico’s designs combine the classic Italian intellectual and conceptual style with the Danish furniture and craft heritage. The Targa Sofa, Allegory Desk, and MOS Series are among the most notable GamFratesi for GTV designs. ALLEGORY DESK WERE QUITE COMPLEX I am curious about the allegory that crosses your mind about the "Allegory Desk" design that I admire. Do you have other meanings for this design, or is it just a name to attract attention? In fact, the creation and construction of the “Allegory Desk” were quite complex! But one thing is certain: We wanted to design a table that had a connection with a poem and a story. It had to be such a story that it had to happen completely spontaneously. “Allegory” also means a story or image used to express literary, large, complex ideas in an accessible way. We thought that it would be a good metaphor for the implementation and design of this project, so we named it. The GTV brand is a big part of European history. What is your view of this well-established brand and its vision for the future? GTV is a brand that tells a story about tradition and craftsmanship. For this reason, it is necessary to express its DNA consistently in every project. Apart from that, making a modern touch to the design is the main point for us. Using traditional, natural materials such as bentwood and Viennese straw, GTV also proves that it can still be up to date. That's why we think it's still possible to maintain this design consistency alongside the vision for the future. Where did your design approach intersect with the GTV? Our first project was a series of furnishings that Targa sofa was part of them. The brief was to create a sofa, but for us, it shouldn't be just a simple sofa. We must create a sofa that contain all the qualities of GTV: wood rethought with contemporary lines with a simple construction that could support the upholstery. And the presence of the Vienna straw must be discreet yet elegant. I think the success of this product is related to the people who were able to read these values. We applied the same guidelines then to the other products. Let's say that we liked to range from seats to complement to upholstery: it was a complete journey. The material used in the series made for the GTV is generally clear: Steam bent solid beech wood. In a sense, it’s playing the lead. What is it like to work with this material? Since the material is natural, it is the material that manages the project. We are honest in projects we love. Therefore, we do not want to strain the natural capacity of the material. We like to challenge the material, but we respect it until the end of the project. After all, wood is a tool to reach the final state of the product. In the digital age, designs are copied rapidly, or people are trying to replicate everything they see on Pinterest. How do you feel when you see copies or similar designs of your designs? Unfortunately, we see too many copies! It has become absolutely crucial for brands to convey their authenticity. I am one of those who believe that furniture should be used and not replaced frequently. Furnitures passed down from generation to generation increases value. Your designs for the GTV for example... Which one of them do you want to pass down to the next generation? We agree with you that the design should be preserved and passed down to future generations. We adore most of our design pieces, but the "Targa Sofa” is our most prized possession. We see it all the time in the studio and at home, and we adore it! If I told you that I can teleport you to a date now, which year would you like to go and why? We'd teleport back to the 1950s. For a month, we would travel to Copenhagen via Paris, then to Milan, and then tour Europe. Not because the postwar period is characterized by a positive spirit in which people discovered themselves and discovered many opportunities to achieve. This period is also significant for its furniture, projects, and architecture.

Haziran 2022 | İnsan | Vol VII İSPANYA’DA BİR UÇUŞ DENEYİMİ Yazı | Mert Çam B arselona’da yaşamaya karar verdiğimde kafamdaki birkaç seçenek arasında bulunan pilotaj eğitimi başta çok da mantıklı görünmese de, bir arkadaşım vasıtasıyla Barselona yakınlarındaki küçük, yerel bir havalimanına konuşlanmış pilotluk okulunu ziyaret ettiğimde kararımı verdim.
