DO PLANTS CLEAN the AIR at HOME?

I’ve always had a great relationship with plants. The question I get asked most often is, without a doubt: “How do you live with all these plants? You could suffocate at night without oxygen!” As if plants have some deadly power, and I’m going to run out of oxygen and suffocate just because I share the same space with them at night!
THE REAL KEY: SOIL AND ACTIVATED CARBON
It’s true—and proven—that plants clean toxic gases from the air while feeding through photosynthesis. However, the famous NASA experiment, which most people have heard of by now, has been widely misinterpreted.
First of all, the experiment was conducted in a completely sealed and insulated room. It observed changes in air quality and the removal of certain harmful gases. The crucial point here is that it wasn’t just the plant that played a role in air purification—soil and the activated carbon used in the experiment were equally key players.
In Dr. Wolverton’s studies, the purpose of the activated carbon was to allow more airflow within the plant’s potting soil. This airflow is essential for a plant’s ability to remove toxins from the air. When the soil is aerated and activated carbon is present, purification occurs. But if compacted, heavy potting soil is used, air circulation is blocked, and microorganisms cannot reach the plant roots to break down toxins.
Apparently, Dr. Wolverton realized just how misinterpreted his experiment had been because he now sells air-purifying plant pots! His company, Plant Air Purifier, offers pots that include a fan for air circulation, activated carbon filters, and water for the plant. With this system, a single plant can purify the air as effectively as 12 regular plants. However, even then, the purification process is slow, and the amount of air cleaned is minuscule compared to the volume we actually breathe—barely the size of a pinhead!

Bitkilerin fotosentez ile beslenmeleri sırasında evdeki zehirli gazları temizlemeleri doğru ve bu ölçülmüştür. Herkesin artık bir şekilde duymuş olduğu meşhur NASA deneyi aslında insanlar tarafından sonuçları yanlış yorumlanmış bir deney.
Öncelikle o deney tamamen kapalı ve yalıtılmış bir odada yapıldı. Ortamdaki havanın değişimi ve bazı zararlı gazların temizlendiği gözlendi. Burada önemli nokta sadece bitkinin değil, toprak ve kullanılan aktif karbonun da bu temizlemede kilit rol oynadığıydı.
Deneyi yürüten Dr. Wolverton'un çalışmalarında aktif karbonun amacı, saksı toprağında daha fazla hava akışına izin vermesiydi. Hava akımı, bir bitkinin havadan toksinleri uzaklaştırma yeteneği için gerekli. Toprak havadarsa ve aktif karbon da varsa temizlik oluyor. Sıkıştırılmış, ağır saksı toprağı kullanılırsa mikroorganizmalar toksinleri parçaladıkları bitki köklerine ulaşamadığı için hava da engelleniyor.
Wolverton kendi yürüttüğü deneyin ne kadar yanlış yorumlandığını görmüş olacak ki, şu an kendisi hava temizleyen bitki saksısı satıyor! “Plant Air Purifier” isimli şirketinin sunduğu saksıların içerisinde hava sirkülasyonu için bir fan da bulunuyor. Aktif karbon filtreleri ve bitki için su da…
Bu sistemde yetiştireceğiniz bir bitki 12 tane bitkiye eşdeğer oranda temizleyebiliyor havayı. Ancak yine de temizleme işlemi yavaş ve temizlenen hava miktarıysa soluduğumuz yanında toplu iğne başı kadar!
