Staying within a cinnamon plantation is not an everyday proposition. In southern Sri Lanka, just minutes from the coastal town of Ahangama, Trebartha East – The Round House makes it possible. Designed by architect Narein Perera, the residence sits immersed in dense greenery, surrounded by cinnamon trees and the steady soundtrack of birdsong.

The house follows a crescent-shaped plan, lifted lightly on stilts and sheltered by corrugated metal roofs supported by slender timber posts. Designed with Sri Lanka’s hot, humid climate in mind, Trebartha operates as a low-energy structure that relies on passive comfort. Its timber structure provides natural insulation, ensuring thermal ease without excess.
Born and raised in Colombo, Perera’s architectural outlook is shaped by his Sri Lankan roots. He often points to the resilience of its people — their ability to adapt and to find contentment in what they have — as his greatest source of inspiration.

Perera describes the house as “a journey for the guest into the dense plantation, which slowly opens up to the expanse of sky on the plateau” — an experience where architecture and landscape are designed to move in quiet alignment.
