With Sussurro, Belgian design brand JOV presents a new rug collection designed by Rotterdam-based designer Laurids Gallée, where material, colour, and tactility are used to shape atmosphere rather than simply fill space.

Founded in 2001, JOV is known for its expressive, bespoke hand-tufted rugs, crafted in the brand’s own atelier in Portugal. Working exclusively with natural, high-quality materials—among them New Zealand wool, Belgian linen, and silk blends—the brand treats the rug as an architectural element, one that quietly but decisively defines an interior.

First unveiled during Milan Design Week 2025, Sussurro consists of three rectangular carpets animated by cloud-like forms that drift across the surface. Subtle shifts in tone and pile height introduce depth and movement, moving the rug away from decoration towards a more spatial reading—somewhere between object and landscape.

This focus on material expression aligns naturally with Laurids Gallée’s practice. Based in Rotterdam, the designer creates one-of-a-kind pieces that privilege material exploration and artistic intent over conventional function. A sense of play runs through his work, allowing unexpected forms and tactile experiments to emerge with ease.

Developed in close collaboration with JOV’s atelier, Sussurro explores advanced tufting techniques to build contrast and softness. Raised wool elements—reaching up to 70 mm in height—sit atop a calmer base of wool and silk, creating a layered surface that invites touch and encourages slower engagement. The collection is available in blue, beige, and dark brown-beige, each variation offering a distinct atmospheric reading within the same sculptural language.

Rather than seeking spectacle, Sussurro operates through restraint. Its shifting volumes and tonal transitions recall the slow movement of clouds at dawn or dusk, introducing a grounding presence that anchors a space without overwhelming it.

With Sussurro, JOV and Laurids Gallée reaffirm the rug as more than a background object, positioning it as a tactile, spatial element that speaks softly, yet with clarity and intent.
