The Pizzeria in a Village of Ten

Çanakkale’nin Ayvacık ilçesine üç kilometre uzaklıkta küçük bir köy Cemaller. Küçük derken, gerçekten küçük: 10 kişi yaşıyor. Ama şaşırtıcı olan bu değil. Esas hikâye, 10 kişilik bu köyün Pizza Mera isminde nefis bir pizzacıya sahip olması ve sadece cuma-cumartesi ve pazar günleri açık olan restorana rezervasyonsuz gitmenin mümkün olmaması… Gözümle gördüm: Tüm masalar doluyor, telefonda aramadan onca yolu tepenler de geri dönmek zorunda kalıyor. Pizza Mera’nın sırrı, taş fırından çıkan ve yöredeki taze ürünlerle bezenmiş pizzaları kadar mekanın kurucuları Gizem-Erdem Kocaoğlu çiftinin enerjisi. Bir kere arı gibi çalışıyorlar. Dağın başındaki küçük restoranlarında kendilerinden başka çalışan yok. Gizem pizzaları yapıyor, Erdem servisi. Garson alıp restoranı büyütmek istemiyorlar. Haftanın diğer günleri açık olmak gibi bir hevesleri de yok. Zaman onlara kalsın istiyorlar. Sekiz yaşındaki kızları Lal’le daha çok vakit geçirmek ve tabii karavanlarına atlayıp gezmek en büyük arzuları.
HİÇLİĞİN ORTASINA GELDİK
Peki neden burayı seçmişler? Hikâyenin en başı aslında İstanbul. Gizem ve Erdem kurumsal şirketlerde iyi pozisyonlarda çalışırken karavanlarıyla bu bölgeye geliyor, sonra da kalmaya karar veriyor. Önce Manici Çiftlik’in işletmesini üstleniyorlar. Gizem’in deyişiyle, “her şeyi bırakıp çat diye hiçliğin ortasına geliyorlar”. Aradan bir süre geçiyor. Bu kez kendilerine göre bir şey yapmak için Manici Çiftlik’ten ayrılmaya karar veriyorlar. Gizem o günleri şöyle anlatıyor: “Bölgeye geliş amacımız farklıydı. Kızımızla daha çok vakit geçirmek istiyorduk. Bundan sapmıştık. Böylece Ayvacık’a yakın yerler bakmaya başladık. Çünkü Lal’in okulu vardı. Derken Cemaller Köyü’ne geldik. Kimse burayı bilmiyordu. Yedi kişi yaşıyordu. Şimdi biz dahil on kişi oldu!”
Gizem ve Erdem, Cemaller Köyü’ne yerleştikten dört ay sonra hem evlerini hem de evin önündeki Pizza Mera’yı tamamlıyorlar. Pizza Mera’yı açmalarının nedeni ise Gizem’in yıllardır pizza yapmayı seviyor oluşu. “Manici Çiftlik’te taş fırın vardı. Arada bir orada tüm çalışanlara zaten pizza yapıyordum. Bu sayede kilometre yapmış oldum” diyor Gizem.
Ve şimdi, eski beyaz yakalı İstanbullu çiftin bu iyi niyetli hikâyesi ve tabii pizzaları, bölgede yaşayan birçok insanın on kişilik köye akın etmesine yol açıyor. Bana kalırsa onların hikâyesinin ilham veren damarı bu: İyi bir şey yaparsanız, isterseniz dağ başında olun farketmez, insanlar mutlaka sizi bulup ödüllendiriyor.
Cemaller is a small village three kilometres away from Ayvacık district of Çanakkale. When I say small, I mean really small: It has 10 inhabitants. But that’s not what’s surprising. The real surprise is that this village with 10 inhabitants has a has a delicious pizzeria called Pizza Mera and it is not possible to visit the restaurant, which is only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, without a reservation. . . I have seen it with my own eyes: All the tables are full and those who have come all the way without calling for a reservation have to turn back. Pizza Mera’s secrets are the energy of Gizem-Erdem Kocaoğlu, the founders of the place, as well as the pizzas coming out of stone ovens and garnished with fresh products from the region. First of all, they work like busy bees. In their little restaurant at the top of the mountain, they have no other staff. Gizem makes the pizzas, Erdem is serving. They don’t want to hire waiters and expand the restaurant. They have no desire to be open on other days of the week. They want to have the time for themselves. Their biggest desire is to spend more time with their eight-year-old daughter Lal and of course to travel more in their caravan.
WE’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE
So why did they pick this place? The very beginning of the story is actually in Istanbul. Gizem and Erdem came to this region with their caravans while working in good positions at large companies, and then decided to stay. First they take over the management of Manici Farm. In Gizem’s words, “We left everything behind and came to the middle of nowhere”. Some time passes. This time they decide to leave the Manici Farm to do something for themselves. Gizem describes those days as follows: “Our purpose of coming to the region was quite different. We wanted to spend more time with our daughter. We had drifted away from that. So we started looking for places close to Ayvacık. Because Lal had to go to school. Soon we came to the village of Cemaller. No one knew about this place. Seven people lived there. Now there are ten, including us!”
Four months after they settled in Cemaller, Gizem and Erdem completed both their house and the Pizza Mera in front of the house. The reason they opened Pizza Mera is that Gizem has been loving to make pizza for years. “There was a stone oven in Manici Farm. I was already making pizza for all the employees there from time to time. This way I could gain experience,” says Gizem.
And now, the well-intentioned story of this former white-collar couple from Istanbul, and of course their pizzas, is causing many people from the region to flock to the village of ten. I think that is the source of inspiration behind their story: If you do something good, it doesn’t matter if you are on top of a mountain, people will find you and reward you.
