Uçakta yan koltuğumda oturan yolcu, elinde dezenfektan ve kâğıt peçete ile koltuk, masa ne varsa siliyordu. Aslında o an aymaya başlamıştım. Bunlar pandeminin ayak sesleriydi. Şubat ayını Norveç kırsalı ve adalarında geçirdiğim için dünya ve internetle bağlantım minimum düzeydeydi. Pandemi etki alanının dışında, her şeyden bihaberdim. Count Antonio Bolza and his wife Angelika buy Castello di Reschio, a 2700-acre estate in the wooded hills of Umbria, Italy. There are fifty ruined farmhouses and an old castle in the land. In a short amount of time, the Bolza family with five children begins to build a life in Umbria, which was not well known in those days. Years later, they decide to share this unspoiled region of the Italian countryside with similar like-minded souls who seek peace and seclusion. Benedikt, the son of the aristocratic family who studied architecture in London, also returned and joined the family operation with his vision. Ultimately, Benedict meticulously reconstructs 22 of the 50 houses in 13 years and even wins prizes in the sector. This includes Architectural Digest's title of ‘one of the top 100 architects working in the field of architecture and design’. Thus, the Reschio that everyone knows today, gradually emerges. In fact, when you arrive at the Castello, this is the first place you should visit. Palm Court is a place where you can sip an addictive Reschio Negroni and absorb the magnificence of the castle walls from the inside. CHRISTMAS MASS AND COSMIC JOURNEY Reschio is also famous for its events on special days. For example, the Christmas Mass on December 24th, held in the chapel of the Bolza family inside the walls. Or a cosmic journey for those who stay at least three days. The Cosmic Journey has a very full schedule, from stargazing with the astronomer to yoga sessions. And the restaurants... July 2024 | Vol 13 TURKISH BELOW ANA LUI ‘Island life is definitely something that makes me happy!’ words Onur Baştürk photos Ana Lui A na Lui has been a travel photographer in Ibiza for 13 years and the first thing I feel when I look at her photos is..: Naturalness, simplicity and, of course, the desire to live on the island because of the appetizing energy of life in her Ibiza + Mallorca photos... I caught up with the ever-mobile Ana in Mallorca and quickly asked her everything I was curious about. Would you say that finding good light and being constantly on the move are the two most important elements of your life? What other elements would you add? Yes, I only use natural light, and I always try to feel the space before I shoot. I believe there is beauty in everything - in every subject, in every place, in every person. It's just a matter of capturing it in the most serene and loving way. Thanks to Instagram, travel photography has become a profession that everyone aspires to. What advice would you give to those who want to do it? I think starting locally is a great idea for all beginners. Photograph and film all the new businesses or cool artisans in your town. Having an existing content makes you more desirable to all the magazines, blogs and brands that need images from your area. I remember shooting most of the places in Ibiza just for fun before I was approached by Condé Nast Traveller. My best advice is to be proactive and create every day! What are the most impressive places that you have ever photographed? Every place is so unique and special, but I think for me, in terms of nature and landscape, it was the Azores. I also loved my little trip to Harbour Island in the Bahamas, which was a totally idyllic place where all my senses relaxed and felt nourished. Interior design often plays a major role in your photos. What style of interiors do you like? I love interiors. I'm currently launching my new business called "Core Living", which will focus on renovating old houses in Mallorca and transforming them into modern living sanctuaries, focusing mainly on sustainability and well-being. I love functional spaces that are very simple yet soothing. Our home should be a sanctuary, a place where we can escape from the chaos of the world and find inner peace. I PRACTICE IQM EVERY DAY AND BEFORE/DURING EVERY SHOOT Can you tell us about the Quantum Healing (IQM) that you practice every day? How did you begin to work with this technique? Do you practice this technique before the photo shoot? I started practicing Quantum Healing in 2019, but before that I used a lot of visualization techniques, created vision boards for each year and did daily affirmations, which I think helped me a lot in booking my dream photography clients and getting the most amazing travel jobs. I practice IQM every day and before/during every shoot I do and this is something I will be talking about in my upcoming photography workshop. I'm super excited to share my techniques and holistic approach to photography with everyone very soon! IBIZA IS MORE RAW AND SPONTANEOUS What are the most impressive places that you have ever photographed? Every place is so unique and special, but I think for me, in terms of nature and landscape, it was the Azores. What makes you happy about these two islands? Island life is definitely something that makes me happy! With a Mediterranean climate, stunning landscapes and beautiful beaches, these islands are perfect for relaxing. Mallorca's rich history, beautiful architecture, vibrant culture and delicious cuisine combined with a very interesting arts and crafts scene make it the place where I feel most at home. Ibiza, famous for its nightlife, is a little wilder. Ibiza is more raw and spontaneous. Both islands encourage a healthy and active lifestyle, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, swimming and sunbathing, as well as access to local and fresh produce. SHOOTING THE MADE IN IBIZA BOOK WAS AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE What are your favorite places in Mallorca and Ibiza? In Mallorca I am currently based in Palma and very close to the Santa Catalina area. I enjoy having all the healthy cafes, yoga studios, fresh markets and beautiful seafront on my doorstep. Away from Palma, I love walking around Biniaraix, Formentor beach, Portixol for a quick drink at sunset, I love the drive from Deia to Andratx and I am really into the nudist part of Es Trenc beach at the moment. In Ibiza you can usually find me having breakfast at Passion in Marina Botafoch, lunch at La Paloma in the middle of the island and dinner at Hambre in Santa Eulalia or Il Buco in Santa Gertrudis. I also love Ses Boques for a quick dip and a plate of fried sardines, Dalt Vila old town for a sunset cocktail, hidden beaches around San Joan and for clubbing I think I'm a HI Ibiza girl (toilet is the place to be). I'm serious, the best party is always at the HI toilet! Your photographs are also featured in the book "Made in Ibiza". What parts of the island have you photographed? And can you tell us about the more undiscovered, hidden corners of Ibiza? Shooting the Made In Ibiza book was an incredible experience. Because I have been living on the island for 13 years, I met people and creatives I had never met before. Focusing on the talented artisans, farmers and artists who make the island a better place showed me another side of the island. We visited and photographed all the talents all over the island, either in their homes or at their workplaces. I learned a lot about the roots of Ibiza and I am very lucky to have been part of this project. SOMERTIMES THE PACE HERE IS SLOW AND STAGNANT, BUT I LEARN TO APPRECIATE IT MORE AND MORE EACH YEAR What are your favorite things about Mediterranean culture? I think a healthy lifestyle and being outdoors most of the time. Spaniards are very active and social people. They like to be outside and they like to get together and celebrate life. Celebrating the little things in life and having a siesta or a lazy Sunday, prioritizing mental well-being is something we shouldn't take for granted. Sometimes the pace here is slow and stagnant, but I learn to appreciate it more and more each year. Şu anda Mallorca'daki eski evleri yenilemeye ve onları modern bir yaşam mabedine dönüştürmeye odaklanacak olan “Core Living” adlı yeni işimi başlatıyorum. Esas olarak sürdürülebilirlik ve iyi yaşamak üzerine odaklanıyorum. Oldukça sade ama rahatlatıcı olan işlevsel alanları seviyorum. Evimiz bir sığınak gibi, dünyanın kaosundan kaçabileceğimiz ve iç huzuru bulabileceğimiz bir yer olmalı. Mallorca ve İbiza'yı çok seviyorsun. Bu iki adada seni mutlu eden nedir? Ada yaşamı kesinlikle beni mutlu eden bir şey! Akdeniz iklimi, çarpıcı manzaraları ve güzel plajlarıyla bu adalar dinlenmek için mükemmel. Mallorca'nın zengin tarihi, güzel mimarisi, canlı kültürü ve lezzetli mutfağıyla son derece ilginç sanat ve zanaat ortamı birleşince kendimi en çok evimde hissettiğim yer haline geliyor. Gece hayatıyla ünlü Ibiza'nın biraz daha vahşi bir doğası var. Ibiza daha ham ve spontane. Her iki ada yürüyüş yapmak, yüzmek ve güneşlenmenin yanı sıra lokal ve taze ürünlere erişmek için pek çok fırsat sunan sağlıklı ve aktif bir yaşam tarzını da teşvik ediyor. Mallorca ve Ibiza'da en sevdiğin yerler? Mallorca'da şu anda Palma'dayım ve Santa Catalina bölgesine çok yakınım. Tüm sağlıklı kafelerin, yoga stüdyolarının, taze pazarların ve harika deniz kenarının kapımın önünde olmasından çok keyif alıyorum. Kulübe gelince… Sanırım ben bir HI Ibiza kızıyım (olunması gereken yer tuvaleti). Ciddiyim, en iyi parti her zaman HI Ibiza’nın tuvaletinde! Fotoğrafların “Made in Ibiza” kitabında da yer alıyor. Adanın hangi bölgelerini fotoğrafladın? Ve bize İbiza'nın daha keşfedilmemiş, gizli köşelerinden bahsedebilir misin? Made In Ibiza kitabını çekmek inanılmaz bir deneyimdi. Çünkü 13 yıldır adada yaşıyorum, daha önce hiç tanışmadığım insanlarla, yaratıcılarla tanıştım. Adayı daha iyi bir yer haline getiren yetenekli zanaatkârlara, çiftçilere ve sanatçılara odaklanmak bana adanın başka bir yönünü gösterdi. Adanın dört bir yanındaki tüm yetenekleri evlerinde ya da iş yerlerinde ziyaret ederek fotoğrafladık. İbiza'nın kökleri hakkında çok şey öğrendim ve bu projede yer aldığım için çok şanslıyım. İyi ışık arayışı ve sürekli hareket halinde olmanın hayatının en önemli iki unsuru olduğunu söyleyebilir miyiz? Başka hangi unsurları eklerdin? Evet, sadece doğal ışık kullanıyorum ve çekimden önce her zaman mekanı hissetmeye ve rahatlamaya çalışıyorum. Her şeyde güzellik olduğuna inanıyorum. Her konuda, her yerde, her insanda… Önemli olan bunu dingin ve sevgi dolu şekilde yakalamak. Akdeniz kültüründe en sevdiğin şeyler neler? Sağlıklı bir yaşam tarzı ve çoğu zaman açık havada olmak. İspanyollar oldukça aktif ve sosyal insanlar. Dışarda olmayı ve hayatı kutlamak için bir araya gelmeyi seviyorlar. Hayattaki küçük şeyleri kutlamak ve zihinsel sağlığa öncelik vererek siesta ya da tembel bir pazar günü geçirmek hafife almamamız gereken bir şey. Ocak 2021 | Seyahat | Türkiye Get Away Duo: Arda ve Sarper A rda Önen: Bodrum’un 21 yıllık ikonik mekanı Sail Loft’un sahibi. Sarper Sesli: 12 yıldır Güney Afrika’da yaşayan, turizm şirketi Ride The Earth ile dünyanın dört bir yanına motosiklet turları düzenleyen bir maceracı gezgin. Bu iki doğa tutkunu yakın dost pandemi döneminde yollara düştü, Anadolu’yu gezmeye başladılar. Bir süre sonra da maceralarına herkesi ortak etmek için “Get Away Duo Project”i yarattılar. Gerisi Arda Önen’in ağzından… Pandemi olmasaydı bu yollara düşme projesi ortaya çıkar mıydı? Aslında iki yıl önce de Kars’a arabayla gitme fikrim vardı. Ancak pandemi öncesi meğer hayat çok hızlıymış! Zaman yaratamadım. O plan rafa kalktı. Yaz başında İsmail Polat’la şu an yaşadığımız kapanmaları öngörmüş ve bu yol projesini çalışmaya başlamıştık zaten. Mekanlarımın kapalı olması da bir fırsat yaratmış oldu. Hemen planlar yapıldı, araçlar yüklendi ve teker döndü. Bu yol maceralarında ikinizle gezmek isteyenlere vaat ettikleriniz neler? Farkınız ne? İlk başta kendimiz gezelim diye plan yaptık. Hazırlık aşamasında konudan bahsettiğimiz arkadaşlarımız, “Biz de geliriz, evde olmaktan yorulduk” gibi yorumlar yapınca proje biraz değişti. Bu noktada etkinlikler ekledik. Yeme-içme ile ilgili sürprizler hazırladık. Mesela umulmadık bir yerde, doğanın ortasında, iyi bir şefin yaptığı yemeklerle bir öğle yemeği yemek. Ya da arabadan gitarını çıkartıp ateş başında küçük bir dinleti yapmak gibi... Sarper bu maceradaki yol ortağın. Onunla nasıl keşişti yolun? Sarper çocukluk arkadaşım. Beraber çok seyahatimiz oldu. Araba ya da motosikletle. Güney Afrika’da yaşıyor ve dünyanın dört bir yanına macera seyahatleri düzenliyor. Pandemi kaynaklı ertelemelerden dolayı Türkiye’de kaldı. Bu konularda tecrübeli olduğu ve çok iyi anlaştığımız için harika bir ortaklık oldu. Hatta şunu da eklemeliyim. Sarper olduğu için projeyi biraz değiştirip geliştiriyoruz. Yeni bir instagram hesabı ile önümüzdeki günlerde duyuracağız. Çok heyecanlıyız… Şu anda belli olan hangi rotalar var? Kars - Çıldır (25-29 Ocak) Kapadokya - Aladağlar (Şubatta) Ovit Dağı (Şubatta) Pandemiyle beraber karayolu cazip hale geldi. Araçla gitmenin avantajı ve dezavantajları neler? Araba yolculuğunu sevenler için avantajlar oldukça çok! En önemlisi kendi araçlarıyla gelenler, kendi grubuyla oluyor. Sosyal mesafe için çok rahatlatıcı bir durum. Soğuk destinasyonlara gittiğimiz için rahatça ve bolca kalın kıyafet, bot, fotoğraf makinesi gibi malzemeleri arabalara alabiliyorsunuz. İstenildigi yerde kısa molalar verebiliyoruz. Aracımızda minik bir mutfak olduğundan istediğimiz yerde durup bir şeyler hazırlayabiliyoruz. Hangi aracı kullanıyorsun? Biz yola donanımlı yüksek bir 4x4 ile çıktık. Bir yere batıp kalırsa kendini kurtaracak vinci var. Çünkü biz seyahatlerden önce kendimizi keşfe gidiyoruz. Tepelere çıkıyoruz, karlı dar yollara giriyoruz. Ama günün sonunda bizimle gelecekler için en güvenli yolu seçip programa koyuyoruz. Kars programı heyecan verici. Oraya gelenleri neler bekliyor? Kars bizi de çok heyecanlandırıyor. Tabii ki Çıldır Gölü’nün üzerinde harika zaman geçireceğiz. Tanınmış bir şef yanımızda olacak. Hava şartları iyi olursa güzel bir trekking planımız var. Bunun dışında tabii ki Ani Harabeleri olmazsa olmaz! Rus Çarlığı’ndan kalma yapıları göreceğiz.

Yazı | Rana Korgül A tina’nın 50 mil güneyinde, sessiz sakin ama tüm asaletiyle yaşayan Spetses Adası’nın ismini hayatımda ilk kez on yıl önce Mikonos’a yaptığımız bir çekimde duymuştum. Orada tanıştığım restoran danışmanı, “Esas gitmeniz gereken yer Spetses Adası. Yunan Adaları’nın en güzeldir!” demişti. Bu konuşmadan kısa bir süre sonra internette de hakkında fazla bilgi edinemediğim Spetses’te buldum kendimi. Atina’daki Pire limanından Flying Dolphin feribotuyla iki saatte varılıyor Spetses’e. Adaya varınca at arabaları karşılıyor sizi. Adada ulaşım faytonlar ya da motosikletlerle sağlanıyor. Araba ise tek tük. Sadece etrafı 22.5 km olan ada çam ağaçlarıyla kaplı ve inanılmaz hoş bir kokusu var. Bu koku çeşitli edebiyatçılar ve ressamlara ilham olmuş defalarca. Spetses’in en önemli özelliği, tüm güzelliğine rağmen büyük turist turlarının istilasına uğramamış olması. Üstelik hiç bozulmamış, sakin, şık ve A plus kalitede. Bizim pek bilmediğimiz bir ada olmasına rağmen, Avrupa jetset’inin çok yakından takip edip ziyaret ettiği bir ada burası. Asil, köklü ve zengin Yunan ailelerinin yazlık malikanelerinin bulunduğu adada bugünün armatörlerinin evleri de mevcut. Ada sadece çam ve zeytin kaplı doğasıyla değil, tipik mimarisini yansıtan 17. ve 20. yüzyılın değişik stillerdeki beyaza boyanmış evleri, neo-klasik villalarıyla da dikkat çekiyor. Dapia’daki çarşısında dolaşırken dere taşlarıyla mozaik döşenmiş sokakları ve evlerin iç avluları şahane. Adada taşkın, uçuk, vur patlasın çal oynasın şeklinde bir eğlence söz konusu değil. Harika yemeklerin yenildiği, çeşitli meze ve balık restoranlarının yanı sıra sadece birkaç tane kafe ve bar var. Bunlardan en ünlüsü ve en özeli çocukluğundan beri ailecek adada yaşayan, adanın en samimi ve güler yüzlü insanı Christos Orloff’a ait olan eski limandaki Orloff Restoran. Burada ne yediysem, hepsi birbirinden lezzetliydi. Ahtapotundan risottosuna, musakkasından sardalyasına, cheesecake’inden mastikalı yani damla sakızlı milföyüne kadar. Bu yemeklerle şarabın yanı sıra Ouzo çok iyi gidiyor, ama Ouzo’nun tatlı oluşundan hoşlanmayanlara, ki bunlardan biri benim, anasonu ve şekeri az Tsipouro’yu tavsiye ederim. Hatta Ouzo bardağında soğuk ve sek, buzsuz ve susuz içilen Tsipouro’yu içmeden dönmeyin! Orloff ‘tan sonra geceye devam etmek isteyenler olursa diye Throubi, Bikini, Balkoni, La Luz, Votsalo ve Guzel adlı barları tavsiye edebilirim. Müzik güzel, insanlar güzel... Herkes mutlu, kendisiyle barışık ve rahat... 50’li yılların başında Spetses’te İngilizce öğretmeni olarak çalışmış, Büyücü adlı romanın yazarı John Fowles ada hakkında şu sözleri söylemiş: “Venüs’ün altında, kırmızımsı mavi gece denizinde, görkemli siyah bir balina gibi ilk defa gördüğümde nefesim kesilmişti. Şu an gözlerimi kapadığımda halen nefesimi kesebiliyor ve onu hatırlayabiliyorum. Bu güzelliği tüm Ege’de bile görmek nadirdir”. Fowles’a katılmamak mümkün mü? Adadan ayrılırken Christos Orloff ve kardeşi Vassilis’in “Sen artık burada turist değil, ziyaretçisin. Yakında geri geleceğini biliyoruz ve seni bekliyoruz” demesi çok hoştu. İstanbul’a geri döner dönmez, “Acaba ne zaman ve nasıl tekrar geri gidebilirim?” diye planlar yapmaya başlamıştım. Aradan geçen on yıl içinde Spetses’e sık sık gider oldum. It’s the only remaining example of Veneto-Byzantine style in the city, a rare echo of Venice’s earliest built heritage, second only to the famed façade of San Marco Basilica. Originally built as a private residence for the Da Mosto family, this remarkable structure later transformed into the Hotel Leon Bianco—where Romantic-era minds like Turner, Shelley, and Rossetti once lingered, and where emperors and exiled nobles checked in under discreet identities. After the hotel closed, the palazzo sat silent for decades—until 2022, when The Venice Venice Hotel breathed new life into its stone walls. FROM GOLDEN GOOSE TO HOSPITALITY: A CREATIVE CONTINUUM The Venice Venice marks a new chapter in Alessandro and Francesca Gallo’s creative evolution—a natural continuation of the path they first set out on in their twenties with the founding of Golden Goose. “We didn’t enter fashion through conventional means,” the Gallos explain. “When we exhibited at a trade show in Paris back in 2001, we didn’t even know we were supposed to present a seasonal collection. We simply brought what we had. While big brands were showing products for six months ahead, we were ready to deliver immediately. That spirit caught people’s attention.” As Golden Goose grew into a global fashion brand, the Gallos began to explore new forms of creative expression. When the opportunity arose to acquire part of Ca’ Da Mosto, they asked themselves: “What would a space look like where all facets of our creativity could coexist?” A space that brings together fashion, food, music, art, design, and lifestyle. That space became a hotel. “We hold the very last hospitality license issued in Venice before the city council placed a freeze on new permits,” they explain. “The property originally consisted of two separate structures, which we were able to unify under single ownership after a long process. Some portions were still owned by noble families who, unable to keep up with the maintenance costs, gradually sold them off piece by piece.” Together with the NWC collective, the Gallos developed a vision rooted in what they call a Postvenetian manifesto—a new hospitality philosophy grounded in respect for Venice’s ecosystem and heritage, and a conscious resistance to the exploitative forces of mass tourism. This approach combines restoration with experimentation, tradition with reinvention. The name of the hotel itself plays on this duality: The Venice Venice. A GEOMETRIC WELCOME Guests arriving by boat are met with a striking sight: a geometric pavilion rising from the canal’s filtered waters, layered in form and rich in drama. This sculptural entrance sets the tone for what’s to come—a cinematic unfolding of space, anchored by Fabio Viale’s reimagined Pietà, portraying a fragmented mother and son. From there, a water passage inspired by the movement of light and reflection—and a subtle homage to Carlo Scarpa—leads through the palazzo, connecting two main floors and weaving past more than 40 rooms. Each one is different, designed in open defiance of traditional spatial rules. Even the smallest room exceeds the standard dimensions of a typical hotel room. The result? The hotel now houses the largest suite ever built in Venice. VENICE M’ART: A LIVING CULTURAL SPACE Just off the entrance, Venice M’Art unfolds like a kaleidoscope of culture—where art, fashion, design, and gastronomy meet in a layered, living space. Once a historic hub of trade and exchange, the space has been reimagined to include a concept store, exhibition zones, a restaurant, and a distinctive bar—all connected by a route from the inner courtyard to the terrace. Throughout the day, Venice M’Art shifts its identity: morning coffee rituals and retail therapy give way to aperitifs and long, leisurely dinners. The bar’s signature cocktail is the Erose Americano, and the traditional Venetian carnival pastry frittelle is reimagined here as a year-round savory treat. ART THAT WRAPS AROUND YOU On the first floor, the Venice Bitter Club creates a quiet tension between past and present. Beneath the building’s original beams, a glowing digital bar flickers into life—framed by a tapestry-like installation that wraps around the walls. This immersive artwork by Francesco Simeti is part of the “A Collection” program, developed in collaboration with historic textile manufacturer Bonotto. Drawing from 18th-century Gobelin-style tapestries, Simeti reinterprets traditional motifs—characters, animals, and flourishes—into a new visual language and symbolic narrative. EVERY ROOM DEDICATED TO AN ARTIST OR MOVEMENT At The Venice Venice, art is not an addition—it’s the architecture of experience. Each room becomes a quiet tribute to a creative force, whether a single artist, a radical movement, or an era-defining idea. From a suite dedicated to Lucio Fontana to a room inspired by Fluxus, from nods to Arte Povera to the poetic world of Cy Twombly and the Pop stylings of Umberto Bignardi—the range is vast, and every space tells its own story. These narratives are enriched through collaborations with artists like Victoria & Marian Zidaru, Brad Elterman, Emilio Isgrò, and Hideyuki Ishibashi, as well as with artisans, collectors, and visionaries such as ceramicist Federico Bonaldi, Venetian Heritage founder Toto Bergamo Rossi, and the Bonotto Foundation. February 2025 | TRAVEL a HYGGE HAVEN in LOFOTEN words Özlem Avcıoğlu Let’s start with the concept of Hygge, a Scandinavian philosophy—particularly rooted in Denmark—that has become increasingly popular as the secret to happiness. Geography plays a significant role in shaping a way of life. Imagine being in one of the Nordic countries, where the majority of the year is cold, rainy, and windy, with six months of darkness. You need something to seek comfort in, and that’s precisely what Hygge is about. At its core, Hygge is the art of creating cozy, inviting spaces. It’s about finding warmth, joy, and relaxation in simple pleasures. And while traveling to Lofoten in Norway during winter can be quite challenging, it’s undoubtedly a journey that embodies the essence of Hygge—offering moments of tranquility, warmth, and an appreciation for life’s simple comforts. Reaching Lofoten in harsh winter conditions requires more than just multiple flight connections—you also have to drive through dark, icy roads. Yet, after an exhausting journey, stepping into Nusfjord Village and Resort felt like wrapping myself in a warm, comforting blanket. The moment I arrived, I turned to my friend and said, “We’re not leaving this place for the next 48 hours!” And that’s exactly what we did—we canceled all other plans and immersed ourselves in the resort’s serene atmosphere. January 2023 | Travel CASA TO Opened in La Punta Zicatela on the Pacific coast of Mexico's rising region of Oaxaca, Casa TO is a hidden oasis with unusual architecture. The hotel project, designed by Ludwig Godefroy Architecture, presents the traditional and the avant-garde together. It stands out with its simplicity and use of concrete, clay, steel, wood. Casa TO, a reinterpretation of an Oaxacan temple, has two historical inspirations. The first is the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul. The other is Hornsey Wood Reservoir in Finsbury Park, London, built in the 19th century. August 21, 2025 | DESIGN & INTERIORS MODERN LOFT SHAPED by EIFFEL and the STATUE of LIBERTY words Alp Tekin photos Edvinas Bruzas We’re in Colmar, the picturesque French town known for its iconic colorful timber-framed houses, narrow streets, and lively balconies. But that’s not all. Colmar is also known as the home of artists such as Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who, in collaboration with Gustave Eiffel (the French engineer behind the Eiffel Tower), designed the famous Statue of Liberty. And here, in a home that seems to contrast with the romantic atmosphere of the town yet pays homage to its craftsmanship heritage, we find ourselves in the Milo Apartment project—reminiscent of New York lofts. The apartment's transformation, designed by London-based OZA Design, founded by Özge Öztürk and Alexandre Simeray, tells a striking “before-and-after” story. “The shock we felt when we first saw the apartment became the starting point of the design process,” Özge and Alexandre share. “What we encountered was a 112-year-old historic building that had been converted into an office. At first glance, it was a space that had lost its soul: carpet tiles, PVC ceiling panels, and fragmented partitions. My initial reaction was, ‘This is a lost cause.’ But this challenge only motivated us further! When my partner Alexandre visited the space, he called me and said, ‘You won’t believe it, but this project has incredible potential.’ That was the moment when the design’s story started to form in our minds. Our respect for the building’s history, original texture, and spirit became the inspiration for giving it a modern identity. We focused on preserving the historic traces in every detail while creating a timeless aesthetic. What initially seemed like a distant dream eventually turned into an exciting design journey.” ELEGANCE IN RIGIDITY Özge and Alexandre reveal that the primary inspiration for the design process was Colmar itself: “The design process began with the rich historical fabric of Colmar. Gustave Eiffel and Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with the powerful stories they contributed to this region’s heritage, were our sources of inspiration. The ironwork in the apartment was chosen to blend Eiffel’s engineering marvels with Bartholdi’s artistic elegance. We aimed to create a language where these two distinct geniuses intersected: an elegance within rigidity, an aesthetic within functionality! While walking through the streets of Colmar, we were drawn to the iron forms and architectural details of the buildings, which became fundamental elements guiding the design.” Özge and Alexandre emphasize that Colmar’s artisans were at the heart of the project: “We saw every piece not just as an object but as an artwork that nourished the soul of the space. By collaborating directly with local blacksmiths, carpenters, and ceramic artists, we infused the region’s character into the design. Each artisan contributed their unique touch, adding a distinctive story to the space. The lighting, for instance, was designed to mimic the warm yet sophisticated atmosphere of Colmar’s evening light. This approach deepened the meaning of the design and allowed us to establish an organic connection between the space and its surroundings.” TIMELESS MODERNITY The OZA Design duo describes the apartment’s design as timeless modernity: “Industrial modern chic might define one aspect of the design, but we aimed to give the project a multi-layered identity. We created a dialogue between minimalist lines, crafted iron details, and natural textures. By blending Colmar’s nostalgic spirit with contemporary design elements, we forged a language that honors the past while focusing on the future.” HIGHLIGHTS - Hidden storage solutions throughout the apartment maintain a clean and organized look. Above the guest suite, an 80-square-meter storage area is concealed behind mirrors that add light and depth to the space. - The reading lamps in the guest room were inspired by the Orient Express. - Black-stained wood contrasts with white plaster wall finishes, directly referencing the town’s coal industry heritage. - OZA Design collaborated with local art gallery Murmure to curate artwork that complements the project. January 2025 | DESIGN & INTERIORS a SENSORY JOURNEY in PARIS: Cosmos and Matter words Karine Monie photos Jérôme Galland, Mathilde Hiley If you need an excuse to visit Paris, here’s the perfect one: this temporary space, located in the heart of Paris in a striking Haussmann apartment adorned with elegant moldings and classic parquet floors, celebrates sustainable design in style. Through a curated selection of pieces by innovative designers, skilled artisans, and visionary artists, it merges aesthetics, wellness, and non-toxic materials. The installation, created by Cosmos and Matter—founded by the Sustainable Design Association in 2021 to promote virtuous practices in the design world—can be visited until February 16. “We believe the nature of the choices we make every day impacts not only our inner selves but also the state of the world at large,” says Marie-Cassandre Bultheel, co-founder of Cosmos and Matter. “We want to offer a new art of living that deeply draws on the knowledge and wisdom of our ancestors while also caring for the future.” “Living in a space is much more complex than a simple interaction with materials,” Marie-Cassandre continues. “It’s about a delicate and precious relationship with the Earth and the cosmos. This is why Cosmos and Matter presents a new proposition, one that can be understood through the sensitivity of our bodies, the power of our perceptions, and the depth of our emotions. For this reason, the installation can be visited barefoot”. How can we live differently within our interiors? This was the starting point for imagining the apartment, which features 10 scenes displayed in different rooms that create a sensory journey. Each area highlights a facet of the art of a more eco-friendly living, where the alchemy between traditions and modernity invites aesthetes, designers and art lovers to question themselves. In the apartment are a Botanic Bar, a Table of the Living, a Moon Lounge, a Sun Lounge and a “cosmic soundscape” room. “I wanted the curation to focus on designers, artisans, and artists who honor natural cycles and universal laws,” says Marie-Cassandre. “It’s about celebrating a form of luxury that respects not just the human soul but also the Earth.” The list of featured designers and artists includes: Alyssa Jos, Anna-Alexandra, Atelier Musset, Attraction Terrestre, Bazar d'Alger, BehaghelFoiny, Elisa Uberti, Hors Studio, Joanna Prunes, Jorg Koziol, Léa Laborie, Linda Pappa, Lucie Ponard, Manon Ledieu, Marie Simon Thomas, Marcela Paz Undurraga, Padmakshi, Pauline Effantin, Paysan Parfumeur, Sacha Parent, Shira Bio, and Tij. The materials chosen for the showcased pieces reflect the philosophy of Cosmos and Matter: reclaimed wood, natural textiles, pigments derived from earth, plant-based leathers obtained from dehydrated fruits and vegetables, and other living, natural, healthy materials (free from petrochemicals)—all selected for their low environmental impact. THE VISIONARY MINDS BEHIND COSMOS AND MATTER The creative force driving Cosmos and Matter comprises two trailblazing women: - Marie-Cassandre Bultheel: An artistic director and curator passionate about creating urban sanctuaries. Known for her conscious approach to design, she is also the co-founder of the Biennale Amour Vivant. - Hélène Aguilar: An entrepreneur, futurist, and exhibition curator with expertise in non-petrochemical materials innovation. She is the founder of the podcast Where is the Beauty? and a co-founder of the Biennale Amour Vivant. Öznellik oluşumu, toplumsal cinsiyet, cinsellik, posthümanizm ve ekofeminizm ile ilgili araştırmalar yapmayı sürdüren Singh, aynı zamanda bu yaz beşinci edisyonu gerçekleşecek Mardin Bienali’nin küratörü. Singh yuzu’nun sorularını yanıtlarken hem Bienal’in kavramsal çerçevesi olan “Çimenin Vaadi”ne dair sırları katman katman önümüze serdi hem de kendi kültürüyle Mardin kültürü arasında kurduğu bağları anlattı. Bienal teması olarak seçtiğiniz çimen metaforunu birçok kavramla ilişkilendirmişsiniz. Ama beni en çok etkileyen şey; çimenin zaptedilemez, kaotik gelişim tavrıyla biz insanların davranış biçimi arasında paralellik kurulması oldu. İnsanların yenilenmesi ve yeniden örgütlenmesi bu şekilde mi gerçekleşecek dersiniz? Bu konuda umudunuz tam mı? Çimenin Vaadi’ni bir de sizden dinlemek isterim… Çimen, Sufi Edebiyatı’nda tekrarlayan bir motif. Çimeni hem alçakgönüllülüğün hem de yeniden dirilişin bir sembolü olarak gören, biraz da paradoksal konuşlandırılan hikâyelerle büyüdüm. Özellikle Cihannara Begüm (Babür Sarayı’ndaki en büyük hanımlara ayrılmış bir unvan) hakkında hayal gücümün üzerinde hüküm süren bir hikâye var. Efsane şöyle devam eder: O zamanlar dünyanın en zengin kadınlarından biri olan ve Sufizm üzerine bir inceleme yazan Cihannara, Piri Nizamuddin Auliya'nın mezarının hemen altında mütevazı bir arazi seçer ve buradaki tek örtünün çimen olmasını emreder. Ebedi istirahati için… Cihannara'nın özverili davranışını tamamen uzlaştırıcı ve geçici buluyorum.
