Ağustos 2022 | Bodrum Coffee Table Book | GASTRO & FUN KARNAS BAĞLARI Yazı & Fotoğraflar | Onur Baştürk S elva ve Haluk İşmen’in 2005 yılında kurduğu Karnas Bağları, son yıllarda özellikle lüks segment otellerde konaklayan turistlerin gözde uğrak yerlerinden biri. KARNAS VINEYARDS writer & photography | Onur Baştürk K arnas Vineyards, founded by Selva and Haluk İşmen in 2005, in recent years, has been one of the most popular destinations particularly for tourists staying in luxury segment hotels. We can list the reasons as follows: 1. The ambiance here reminds of Tuscany. By following a curled, romantic, and idyllic path through olive gardens, fruit trees, and vineries, visitors reach a building made of terracotta, surrounded by cypress trees. 2. Karnas Vineyards is home to 2500 olive trees, some of which are young and some of which are hundreds of years old, from the Memecik, Domat, and Gemlik types, including the exquisite olive tree that is said to have been planted in the Roman period. 3. The trademark of this place is the Zinfandel grape. The famous Zinfandel grape, which grows in California’s Napa Valley, has been growing, for a long time, here as well, thanks to the İşmen couple, and its wine is served next to meals. 4. Furthermore, the meals served in the vineyard restaurant is very delicious. In the menu, composed by Chef Aslı Mutlu, one of the founders of Slow Food Bodrum, risotto, piruhi and lamb cooked with vineyard seasonings take place. Additionally, the restaurant’s sunset view is the most striking element that chaperones this gastronomic experience. Tamamı için... For more... November 17, 2025 | DESIGN & INTERIORS CASA CAPIROTE Casa Capirote distils the spirit of Sevilla into a calm, contemporary interior shaped by craft, light, and a quietly refined sense of place. In Casa Capirote, Alejandro Cateto distills the character of Sevilla into a calm, contemporary interior. The project takes its cue from the city’s most emblematic craft—Triana pottery—whose colours, patterns and artisanal spirit appear throughout the space. From the geometric headboard and exposed beams to the custom sink and ceramic accents, these references echo the decorative language of Plaza de España, lending the apartment a sense of place and quiet authenticity. The layout is conceived as a fluid, multifunctional space, defined not by walls but by curtains. This simple yet intentional device allows the interior to shift between open, social living and a more intimate, private atmosphere. The result is a home that adapts to daily rhythms while retaining a clean, uninterrupted aesthetic. Natural light plays a central role. By avoiding fixed partitions, the apartment remains bright and open, with daylight highlighting the earth and green tones that anchor the palette. The warmth of this light amplifies the feeling of continuity with the outdoors, creating a soft, inviting environment shaped by the cadence of the city. Walls finished in lime mortar reinforce the connection to Andalusian building traditions, adding texture without visual weight. Ceramic details deepen this link to local heritage, while contemporary furniture—with its organic lines and understated forms—introduces a refined counterpoint. Together, they strike a balance between modern comfort and craft-driven character. Casa Capirote reflects Sevilla not through literal motifs, but through material sensitivity, atmosphere and rhythm. It is a home that honours the city’s architectural and cultural lineage, while translating it for a quieter, more sophisticated contemporary life.

February 2025 | VOL 14 HOLISTIC STAY words Alp Tekin The sun of the Canary Islands casts dreamy shadows over the palm-lined Arico Valley on the southeastern coast of Tenerife. A warm breeze rustles through the lush lavender, rosemary, and cypress bushes, filling the air with a delightful aroma. There’s hardly a soul in sight—just a cluster of traditional houses surrounding EcoHotel El Agua. Nestled among expansive olive groves, EcoHotel El Agua is a stylish blend of design, integrative medicine, and sustainability. From the epigenetic test you take right when you arrive to the Wim Hof exercises before breakfast, everything is designed with a holistic touch. The hotel’s founder, Anthony Picq, has carefully restored a 200-year-old abandoned stone farmhouse and transformed the dry land into a lush oasis filled with olive, lemon, banana, and palm trees. With a passion for Hippocratic medicine, phytotherapy, and naturopathy, Anthony has also created a fantastic menu of treatments and programs for guests to enjoy during their stay. Anthony, how did you decide to create EcoHotel? What was your goal in building the hotel? More than a goal, creating EcoHotel is a mission for me. It's rooted in the philosophy of preventive medicine inspired by Hippocrates. My goal is to promote sustainability and holistic health in a space that reflects the principles of wabi-sabi, an aesthetic that celebrates beauty in imperfection. This hotel is designed to nurture both the environment and the well-being of our guests, creating a harmonious experience that aligns with these values. In our design process, we prioritized sustainability, ensuring that all materials and techniques are eco-friendly and in harmony with the surrounding environment. We also focused on creating versatile spaces that promote well-being and relaxation, allowing guests to immerse themselves in nature. The design embodies a wabi-sabi aesthetic that celebrates natural imperfection and fosters a sense of peace. Ultimately, our goal was to create a space that not only looks beautiful, but also supports the holistic lifestyle we advocate. You describe EcoHotel as “not just a hotel, but a search for a holistic way of life”. Could you elaborate on that? What is a holistic lifestyle, and what exactly do you promise your guests? When I say, "It's not a hotel, it's a search for a holistic way of life," I mean that EcoHotel transcends traditional hospitality. A holistic lifestyle encompasses a balanced approach to well-being, integrating physical, mental, and emotional health. It recognizes the intricate connections between our environment, our health, and our overall quality of life. At EcoHotel, we promise our guests an immersive experience that fosters this holistic way of living. This includes wellness programs that promote preventative medicine, sustainable practices that honor the planet, and soothing design inspired by Wabi-Sabi, which encourages mindfulness and appreciation of life’s imperfections. Our goal is to create an environment where guests can rejuvenate, reconnect with nature, and cultivate a deeper understanding of what it means to live in harmony. Through workshops, healthy dining options, and nature-inspired activities, we aim to empower our guests to embrace this holistic philosophy long after their stay. The food experience at the hotel is also noteworthy. Guests can choose between vegan, raw vegan, or vegetarian cuisine, all served in a unique cave setting. Can you provide more details about this dining experience? Yes, that's correct! At EcoHotel, we provide a unique food experience that emphasizes a farm-to-table philosophy, utilizing organic, seasonal, and locally sourced products. Our Ecochef, Kalo, is a true culinary artist, crafting what we define as healthy and delicious gastronomy. Guests can choose from vegan, raw vegan, or vegetarian cuisine, all thoughtfully prepared to highlight the flavors and nutritional benefits of the ingredients. Meals are served in a mystical cave setting, surrounded by the lush greenery of the tropical forest and complemented by a serene swimming pool with crystal-clear blue water. This transcendent dining experience is enhanced by a tranquil atmosphere, free from electromagnetic waves—only the gentle breeze and the serene silence of nature accompany you during your meal. Hotels like the EcoHotel, which are ecologically conscious and also serve as retreats, are on the rise. What changes do you foresee in the accommodation industry in the near future? The rise of eco-conscious hotels like EcoHotel reflects a broader shift in the accommodation industry toward retreats that prioritize well-being and a connection to nature. In the near future, I anticipate a growing demand for disruptive offerings that provide healing spaces where guests can truly connect, disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and regenerate both body and soul. Travelers are increasingly seeking accommodations that offer beautiful architecture, healthy food options, and opportunities to learn about sustainable and healthy habits. This shift is moving away from the conventional all-inclusive resorts that often dominate the tourism landscape. While all types of tourism can coexist and share the market, there has been an extraordinary need over the past four years for new spaces that allow people to spend days immersed in therapies, enjoying good vibes and surrounded by exquisite gardens and natural beauty. I believe this trend will continue to grow as more travelers prioritize experiences that promote wellness, sustainability and a deeper connection to the environment during their stays. for more Print VOL XIV - 2024 / 25 €20,00 Price Add to Cart

September 3, 2025 | Art & Culture TR BELOW the THREE-LEGGED CAT: 18th ISTANBUL BIENNIAL The Istanbul Biennial, one of the city’s most anticipated cultural events, returns this fall with a route that turns Istanbul itself into an exhibition. Running from September 20 to November 23, 2025, the 18th edition—organized by İKSV with the support of Koç Holding—comes under the intriguing title The Three-Legged Cat. The Istanbul Biennial, one of the city’s most anticipated cultural events, returns this fall with a route that turns Istanbul itself into an exhibition. Running from September 20 to November 23, 2025, the 18th edition—organized by İKSV with the support of Koç Holding—comes under the intriguing title The Three-Legged Cat. Curated by Christine Tohmé, this biennial unfolds over three years. Its first chapter brings together works by more than 40 artists across eight venues within walking distance along the Beyoğlu–Karaköy axis. Staying true to its nomadic spirit, the Istanbul Biennial once again reimagines the relationship between art and the city, weaving Istanbul’s streets, buildings, and public spaces into its very fabric. WALKING THE CITY The route offers a fluid experience, allowing visitors to move easily on foot and encounter art in the rhythm of the city. Among the venues is the Greek Primary School of Galata, restored between 2019 and 2024, and now reopening as a biennial space. In Karaköy, the newly revived Zihni Han makes its public debut, while a ground-floor gallery at No. 35 Meclis-i Mebusan Avenue reemerges as a cultural stop, having once been part of the 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial. Nearby, the early 20th-century Muradiye Han joins the route after its recent restoration, alongside Gallery 77 just across the street. The historic Cone Factory, once producing sweets and ice cream cones, also transforms into a biennial venue. Between Karaköy and Beyoğlu, the Garden of the Former French Orphanage offers visitors both a place to pause and an exhibition site, while on İstiklal Avenue, the iconic Elhamra Han—built in 1827 as one of Istanbul’s first theaters—hosts the biennial for the very first time. (Explore all venues on the map: link ) A THREE-YEAR JOURNEY Tohmé envisions the biennial as a process unfolding across three stages: 2025: Over 40 artists’ works presented through exhibitions, performances, screenings, and talks. 2026: The creation of a permanent art academy and a public program in collaboration with local initiatives. 2027: A final chapter bringing together the works and experiences of the previous two years in an exhibition and workshop series. Hemen yakınında bulunan, Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi’ndeki bir bina da (no. 35) zemin katındaki galeriyle bienal mekânına dönüşüyor.

January 2021 | People TR Below MUZAFFER YILDIRIM Creating Something New Defines Who I Am Words Onur Baştürk Photos Emre Doğru Muzaffer Yıldırım is an entrepreneur constantly brimming with ideas, a fact he openly embraces. Turning his excitement into tangible projects lies at the heart of his character and life’s path. But there’s more to him than just that. Here’s a look at Muzaffer Yıldırım’s relentless journey from past to present. Don’t take a break—read it all in one go! What motivates you to create something new? Creating something new is part of my nature—maybe even my purpose in life. My goal is to make a positive contribution to the world and bring change through what I do. I can’t stop myself; my mind is constantly buzzing with countless ideas! Every project I’ve undertaken so far—cinemas, sports clubs, restaurants, hotels—has one thing in common: I never get involved in something I wouldn’t personally experience. If I wouldn’t live, stay, work out, watch a movie, or dine there, I don’t pursue it. The thought of “This place needs something like this” is often the spark for a new project. Will these endless dreams ever stop? I don’t know. Does it scare me sometimes? Absolutely! FROM TWO PIGEONS TO 150: A CHILDHOOD IN FATIH From the Muzaffer who trained pigeons in Fatih to the Muzaffer of today, what has changed, and what has remained the same? I was born into a migrant family in Fatih, the son of a politically active father. Looking back, I see that the character I built in childhood has carried on into who I am today. Yes, I used to keep pigeons. Starting with just two, I ended up with 150. While others with larger setups had fewer birds, I think my drive to do things big and impactful started back then. That same philosophy, ambition, and persistence are still with me. I used to be a fighter on the streets; now I fight in other ways. But let me tell you this—I’m committed to getting along with life and adding value to it. I DIDN'T LEAVE BECAUSE I GOT BORED You’ve said goodbye to many of the ventures you’ve built, like Mars and MAC. Were those purely strategic decisions, or did you leave because you got bored? Some of the businesses we started were designed from day one to eventually be sold. This was the case for both cinema and sports. Mars Entertainment Group, for example, was something Menderes Utku and I built and developed with the intention of selling. Today, we’ve sold off all of its assets, fulfilling the dreams we had in the 2000s. So no, I didn’t leave these ventures because I got bored.. Menderes has this analogy for me: “You steer the boat, drop anchor, guide the boat to the anchor, and then throw the anchor farther ahead. You’re always focused on moving the anchor forward.” CREATING CINEMA EXPERIENCES WITH MENDERES UTKU The risks you and Menderes Utku took when founding Mars and the results you achieved are incredible. How did the idea for luxurious cinema experiences come about? In the mid-1990s, Menderes and I constantly talked about doing something new. At the time, I had left Alarko and was receiving several job offers. With the intention of becoming entrepreneurs, we set up a fantastic office with what little money we had and began our journey. We saw an opportunity in the cinema industry and decided to invest. But to do so, we needed capital. Using our existing funds, we launched Nupera, which later helped finance our cinema investments. In 2002, we opened a cinema under the Ritz-Carlton that served sushi and champagne. The idea came partly from Menderes, who hadn’t been to a movie theater in years and said, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could enjoy going to the movies again?” WE KNEW OUR ROLES IN THE PARTNERSHIP What are the similarities and differences between you and Menderes Utku when it comes to work? Menderes and I started as friends, then became partners, and eventually family. While we have significant differences in character, our greatest shared trait is this: “Whatever we do, we aim to do it in the best way possible.” Our human values and core philosophies align perfectly. The difference lies in how we approach work. Menderes is far more strategic and looks at things from diverse perspectives. When developing a project, he plays the defensive role, while I’m more optimistic. In our partnership, we had a clear understanding of our roles. While Menderes focused on thoroughly analyzing the negative aspects of a project, I would look at the positive side. Ultimately, if we could both accept the worst-case scenario, we would move forward with the investment. This blend of perspectives often led to remarkable results. THE NUPERA ERA: 15 YEARS OF AUTHENTICITY Nupera was legendary for Istanbul. What stands out to you from that time? When Nupera opened in 2002, Beyoğlu had little to offer beyond seedy bars and nightclubs. Apart from Babylon, the area lacked vibrant venues. By launching Nupera in what was seen as a dodgy neighborhood, we introduced a fresh experience to people’s lives. Globally, it was reminiscent of Soho’s rise or London’s revitalized Indian quarter. New spaces always spark curiosity and draw people eager to experience something different. At Nupera, you could see people from all walks of life mingling—those heading to the adjacent nightclubs alongside our patrons. The mystery of Beyoğlu at that time was incredibly appealing. Nupera wasn’t about commercial gain; it was a genuine, hands-on venture where I worked the door, served at the bar, and Menderes handled the music. That authenticity lasted 15 years. We eventually decided to close it down, not because it wasn’t doing well, but because we had stopped going ourselves. Is there anyone who inspires you in hospitality? André Balazs, the visionary behind Chateau Marmont, Chiltern Firehouse, Sunset Beach, The Standard, and The Mercer. READY TO BUILD BOATS, WATCH OUT! You named your boat “Belka” after your mother. How did the design process go? Yes, I named it after the strongest woman I know—my mother. I’ve always loved the sea. My first experiences were with inflatable rowboats, followed by small speedboats. My dream of “Belka” began in 2012 when I saw Rıza Tansu’s “Only Now” in Bodrum. By 2016, after selling my company and finally having the means, I turned that dream into reality. Designing Belka took years of thought and collaboration with Tansu; construction itself took three years. MUZAFFER YILDIRIM Yeni Bir Şey Yaratmak Benim Karakterim Kafasından her an binbir proje geçen bir girişimci Muzaffer Yıldırım. Zaten bunu kabul ediyor. Heyecanlandığı an hayalindeki projeyi gerçekleştirmek onun karakteri ve hayat çizgisinin özü. Andre Balazs. Chateau Marmont, Chiltern Firehouse, Sunset Beach, The Standard ve The Mercer’ı yaratan adam. Teknene annenin ismini (“Belka”) verdin. Ne kadar sürdü teknenin tasarımı? Bizzat onunla da uğraştın, ilgilendin. Evet, tekneme tanıdığım en güçlü kadının, annemin ismini verdim: Belka. Denize ilk çıkışım kürekli şişme botla başladı, küçük sürat botlarıyla devam ettim. Denizde olmayı, denizi hep sevdim. Belka’nın hayali 2012 yılında Rıza Tansu yapımı “Only Now” isimli tekneyi ilk kez Bodrum’da gördüğüm an başladı.

November 26, 2025 | DESIGN & INTERIORS a MODERN SANCTUARY in KEY BISCAYNE words YUZU Editorial interior design Lamarc Studio photos Mateo Soto production Karine Monié Just ten minutes from Miami’s vibrant rhythm, a quiet island home finds its pace. Designed by Marcela Restrepo of Lamarc Studio — the Colombian-born designer with studios in both California and Florida — this Key Biscayne residence blends modern refinement with the warmth of a deeply personal gallery. Nero Marquina marble and travertine checkerboard floors anchor the entry, where antique mirrors and sculptural accents echo a soft conversation between past and present. An RH Aquitante ceiling lamp, glass pieces by Reflections Copenhagen, and L’Object’s poetic forms set the tone for what the home embodies: serenity, clarity, and a sense of collected elegance. WHERE TWO AESTHETICS MEET The homeowners come from two very different stylistic worlds. One is drawn to crystal, moldings, and classical detail; the other to contemporary minimalism and clean lines. Rather than choosing sides, Lamarc Studio orchestrated a dialogue. “Classical elements were reinterpreted through a contemporary lens,” Restrepo notes. “Ornament and simplicity, history and modernity — meeting in harmony.” This balance plays out through Poliform’s Saint Germain modular sofa, Artefacto side tables, Tom Dixon’s Melt lighting, Iittala’s Aalto vase, and the sculptural presence of Baccarat and Lalique pieces. Each object adds a quiet rhythm, shaping the home into a thoughtful, lived-in gallery. A DAYLIGHT HOME, A NIGHTTIME GLOW A private elevator opens directly into sweeping views of the Atlantic and the Miami skyline. The entire residence unfolds across one level, where the living, dining, and bar areas form a fluid, continuous sequence ideal for gatherings. The bar — lit by Baccarat’s Mille Nuits fixtures and layered with Reflections Copenhagen objects, Assouline titles, Christofle accents, and Riva editions — reflects the owners’ love of hosting. In the living room, a Maxalto coffee table carries Cartier’s Panthère, Lalique’s Zeila panther, and Baccarat’s sculptural Mille Nuits vase, forming a tableau that feels both curated and effortless. The artworks — from Ignacio Iturria, Manuel Rendón, and Victor Rodriguez — punctuate the calm palette, standing out with clarity against the home’s gentle tones. AN ODE TO LIGHT, STONE AND ATMOSPHERE Miami’s warm light and endless-summer spirit informed every design decision. Very light ecru walls offset crisp white moldings; floors and veneers remain quiet, allowing expressive stones like Viola and Hermitage to become sculptural elements in their own right. The bedrooms embrace a more hushed language: natural textures, soft taupes, and subtle contrasts that encourage rest. Here, the restraint allows the art and furniture to take center stage, creating rooms that feel luminous and quietly confident. The owners’ background in ship design shaped the material palette — an appreciation for durability, aging, and surfaces that gather character over time. Travertine floors run throughout the home, creating a seamless and grounding foundation. Bathrooms, by contrast, deliver architectural boldness. In the primary bath, dramatic Viola stone vanities meet micro-cement finishes and a minimalist custom vanity, balancing intensity with calm. In the kitchen, a monolithic Hermitage waterfall island becomes the sculptural heart of the space, complemented by minimalist ivory cabinetry, matte black fixtures, clear quartz accents and DWR tractor stools.

july 2023 | Design & Interiors english below New project of Brent Comber C O N N E C T I O N words Alp Tekin B rent Comber Originals; yontulmuş nesneler, fonksiyonel parçalar ve tasarım ortamları yaratan bir tasarım stüdyosu. Markanın kurucusu Brent Comber ve ekibi, Kuzeybatı Pasifik'in benzersiz ortamından ilham alarak fikirleri ve hikâyeleri üç boyutlu sanat eserlerine, enstalasyonlara ve mobilyalara dönüştürüyor. Comber’in son projesi ise “Connection”. B rent Comber Originals; a design studio that creates sculpted objects, functional pieces and design environments. Inspired by the unique setting of the Pacific Northwest, th e brand's founder Brent Comber and his team transform ideas and stories into immersive works of art, installations and furniture. Comber's latest project is “Connection”. Connection made using yellow cedar wood; derived from the cord of roots used to tie poles or make baskets. “I like to take what nature gives us naturally and use that gift in craft or art,” Comber says. HOW WAS IT START? “I began designing and building gardens about 30 years ago,” remembers the founder, Brent Comber. “The designs were generally Pacific Rim influenced. By that I mean Japanese philosophies centered on balance and harmony plus incorporating plants and grasses of northern California that are more drought tolerant. At the time there was no furnishings available that I felt were sensitive to these designs so I began carving benches from timber recovered from old buildings being dismantled in Vancouver. The Saddle bench was the first piece I ever did for a garden in West Vancouver and the homeowner actually moved it into her home. I liked the experience of carving and the idea that the bench looked and felt right at home inside and out. I eventually stopped making gardens but kept making pieces in this style.” WHY WOOD? Comber answers this question as follows: “I’ve always been drawn to wood because of its connection to place, especially wood that grows where I live. Indigenous wood talks about climate and place, specifically the Pacific Northwest. For me the most authentic wood is unprocessed; wood with cracks, bark sinews, knots, and swirling or uneven grain patterns.”

Mart 2022 | Tasarım | Türkiye for english click here Vintage Dokunuşlu Sinematik Banyo Nasıl Tasarlanır Derleyen | Oktay Tutuş Fotoğraflar | Maxime De Campenaere Ü nlü iç mimar Maxime De Campenaere , seramik karoların özgünlüğünü ve onları kullanarak bizi geçmişe götürmeyi seviyor. Mahalledeki evlere baktım ve inşaatın ilerleyişini not ettim. Size ilham veren filmler hangileri? How to Design a Cinematic Bathroom with a Vintage Touch Editor | Oktay Tutuş Photography | Maxime De Campenaere F amous interior designer Maxime De Campenaere loves the authenticity of ceramic tiles and using them to take us back to the past. He likes to use this material in unusual ways, as in the furniture series he designed for the first time. What matters to him is the movies and the impact they have had on them. It is possible to see this effect in two different bathrooms he made for Apartment Roseaux, one of his latest projects. Without further ado, we hear the story of these bathrooms with cinematic and vintage inspirations from him. What movies inspire you? I am fascinated by films in which the set plays an important role. Like Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange or The Shining, Lucas Guadagnino's Io sono l'Amore, or Jacques Tatie's Playtime. What has been your most challenging project so far? Each project is a challenge in itself, but in terms of budget and timing, BeCentral was definitely a challenge. Currently Europe's largest digital campus is located at Brussels Central Station. In fact, we were originally commissioned to design a 60 square meter area. It later evolved into a 6,500-square-metre, nine design concept. We only had two years to do it and we finished with less than 400 euro per square meter for all work including furniture. Speaking of materials, what do you like about ceramic tiles that you use all the time? Ceramic tiles are extremely versatile and are now available in many different designs. I think that I can produce different aesthetic solutions with them and at the same time meet all the demands of functionality. On the one hand, they represent originality, on the other hand, I think they bring dynamism to my designs. For example, I create a vintage-influenced touch or deliberately create contrasts, as in this special housing project recently. Can you talk a little bit about these cinematic effect bathrooms? We had the task of designing two bathrooms and we wanted to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere for the parents and a new and stimulating mood for the children. We also needed a bracket to connect the two rooms from a design standpoint. Craft works were the perfect solution for this project. We used the tiles in the en-suite bathroom in a golden yellow flame color with black fixtures, accessories and black and white floor covering. This way a perfect balance has been struck between contemporary design and vintage feel. For the children's bathroom, we chose blue-green flaming tiles because of its new and lively impression. We painted the frame of the shower cubicle red and deliberately created a contrast. The custom-made eye-shaped mirror also winked, adding a playful air to the design. Çapa 4

January 05, 2026 | DESIGN & INTERIORS a QUIET HOUSE AMONG the PINES words YUZU Editorial | photos Elizaveta Gurovskaya Set within a pine forest and only a short walk from the edge of a calm lake, this country house was conceived as a lived-in retreat—one that balances daily life with a sense of withdrawal. Designed by interior designer Natalia Fedotova, the project draws on the restrained elegance of Belgian minimalism, translated into a domestic language that feels warm, practical, and quietly expressive. REWORKING THE PLAN Rather than working within the limits of the original developer’s plan, Fedotova chose to rethink the home from the inside out. A centrally placed winter garden was repurposed into a compact service core, housing a guest bathroom, a children’s washroom, pantry, and laundry. This move not only simplified the home’s technical infrastructure but also introduced a fluid, circular circulation—allowing daily life to unfold naturally, without interruption. Materiality sets the tone. Natural wood surfaces meet micro-concrete floors, while subtle chrome accents introduce a precise, contemporary edge. The palette remains intentionally soft and organic, keeping attention where it belongs: on the expansive forest views framed by the windows. The architecture steps back, letting nature lead. Moments of character appear quietly. An orange antoniolupi sink, vibrant cabinetry in the laundry room, and a curated mix of vintage lighting add rhythm without breaking the calm. Ceramics by Ekaterina Popova and artworks by contemporary artists—among them a linocut by V. Nasedkin and a painting by E. Bortnikov—are integrated with restraint, more discovered than displayed. The result is a home that feels both minimal and alive. Calm, but never impersonal. Designed to support family life rather than dominate it, the interior acts as a quiet framework—one that ultimately defers to its most enduring feature: the forest and lake just beyond the glass.

Nisan 2020 | Botanik | Türkiye Fem Güçlütürk’le botanik ‘talk şov’ Yazı | Onur Baştürk L abofem’in yaratıcısı Fem Güçlütürk bir süredir Muğla’nın Ula/Çıtlık tarafındaki evinde yaşıyor. November 2024 | DESIGN & INTERIORS TURKISH BELOW DREAM BIG, STAY HUMBLE UNIQKA words Onur Baştürk The design brand Uniqka, which positions leather as its signature material, has been making waves this year with its Silos Collection, introduced at Milan Design Week. The collection also earned the brand a spot on the shortlist for the Dezeen Awards 2024. Riding this wave of excitement, Uniqka continues to dream big while remaining "organic and humble”. Founders Kerem Ariş and Merve Parnas share the story behind the brand. LEATHER IS AT THE HEART OF UNIQKA’S DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Uniqka is known for its focus on leather, treated with environmentally friendly vegetable tanning rather than harmful chromium tanning. What made you choose leather as your primary material? Uniqka draws its inspiration from sculptor Koray Ariş, who has been using leather in his works for nearly fifty years and has developed unique processing techniques. Our material inspiration comes from him. Leather is Uniqka's signature material, featured in all our products. However, we don't exclusively use leather because Uniqka isn’t a leather goods brand; it’s a design brand. We incorporate other materials into our creations as well. Positioned in the furniture and home decor category, we are a contemporary design brand that uses leather as a defining material. The leather we use is vegetable-tanned, which is both eco-friendly and more natural in character. This process highlights the material's authentic beauty and texture. Leather is actually a by-product of the meat industry, which makes it a form of waste. Transforming this waste into a valuable, durable material is one of humanity’s earliest examples of upcycling. In addition to leather, new-generation materials are emerging as alternatives, and we’re closely following these developments. We run tests and integrate some of these materials into our designs. CRAFTMANSHIP IS UNIQKA’S FOUNDATION Another key aspect of Uniqka is its use of traditional craftsmanship. Recently, many unique brands have been emphasizing artisanship. What guided you toward this approach? Uniqka is a contemporary design brand that creates modern living products through craftsmanship. Craftsmanship is Uniqka’s core value, and just like our material inspiration, this comes from Koray Ariş. He is a craftsman-artist who creates each of his sculptures by hand. His attention to detail and production quality serve as our greatest source of inspiration. Uniqka incorporates leather craftsmanship, and all production is done in-house. This gives us a significant advantage and flexibility. In addition to our collections, we have the infrastructure and expertise to take on special projects and collaborations. SHORLISTED FOR DEZEEN AWARDS This year, you’re a nominee for the Dezeen Awards 2024 in the Furniture Design category. How did the idea for the Silos Collection come about? Studiopepe, whose design language and work we greatly admire, is a design studio that collaborates with significant brands. Once we decided to work together, we asked them to create a coffee table collection for Uniqka, which led to the birth of Silos. The collection features minimalist, geometric forms inspired by silo structures, and its material and color diversity make it especially rich. With Silos, we’ve been shortlisted for the prestigious Dezeen Awards. Unlike many award platforms that have multiple winners per category, Dezeen Awards selects only one winner per category. We’re among six finalists chosen from thousands of submissions, and just making it to this list is as significant as winning. You often collaborate with different designers. Do they approach you, or do you choose them? How does the process work? It works both ways. Designers may reach out to us, or we may contact them directly. Sometimes, serendipitous meetings at fairs, events, or through mutual connections lead to collaborations, whether immediately or years later. Do you have any dream collection concepts that haven’t come to life yet? Of course—several, in fact! As a brand, we aim to work on a global scale, dreaming big while staying organic and humble. We’ve steadily turned our dreams into reality and continue to work hard to bring new ones to life. CHAOS AND INSPIRATION IN ISTANBUL Producing such minimalist collections in the chaotic city of Istanbul is an intriguing contrast. How does Istanbul influence your work in design? The chaos of Istanbul stems from its density—its people, cultures, structures, and emotions. We try to draw inspiration and benefits from this environment. This chaos and crowd also bring diversity and opportunities, which we believe we utilize well in terms of inspiration and production. Our workshop is centrally located in Maçka, on a quiet street. We’re fortunate to be so close to everything yet distanced from the surrounding noise. However, Uniqka doesn’t identify itself as a Turkish or Istanbul-based brand. We are a global brand headquartered in Istanbul. Our vision allows our products to seamlessly fit projects in cities like New York, Tokyo, or Istanbul. MOST POPULAR COLLECTIONS Which of your collections has been the most popular? Plato and Silos. Designed by Defne Koz, the Plato collection features a variety of organizer trays available in different sizes and colors. They’re versatile, functional for use at home, in offices, or hotel rooms. Its variety, along with the awards it has won, contributed to its commercial success. We introduced Silos at Milan Design Week 2024, where it garnered significant global media attention. İstanbul’a hakim olan kaos, yoğunluktan kaynaklanıyor.
