Hem tasarım stüdyosu hem de bir zanaatkâr atölyesi olan Novocastrian’ın ilk aydınlatma koleksiyonu “Insulator”la tanışın. Markanın kurucusu Richy Almond'un Newcastle ve Londra arasındaki Doğu Kıyısı ana hattı boyunca yaptığı sayısız tren yolculuğundan esinlenen koleksiyon, elektrik hatlarının ritmik deseninden ve onları süsleyen fincan tabağı benzeri pim izolatörlerinden ortaya çıkmış. 

Almond, masif pirinç ve preslenmiş camdan üretilen kolye, aplik ve masa lambaları hakkında "Kavramsal olarak ışıkların ilginç olduğuna inanıyorum. Birçoğumuzun her gün karşılaştığı manzaranın işlevsel bir parçasını alıp yeniden yorumluyor ve özel bir şey haline getiriyor” diyor. 

Bu koleksiyonda kaç parça var? 

Dört temel parça; bir sarkıt, bir masa lambası ve iki duvar lambası. Ancak koleksiyon, neredeyse sonsuz konfigürasyonların oluşturulmasına izin verecek şekilde tasarlandı. 

Tasarım stüdyonuzun konsepti nedir? 

NOVOCASTRIAN miras, zanaatkârlık ve yeniliğin bir kutlaması. Gelenek ve modernite arasındaki boşluğu doldurarak uzun süre dayanacak parçalar yaratma vizyonunun somutlaşmış hali. Her bir NOVOCASTRIAN tasarımı, endüstriyel tarihin yankılarının net bir şekilde hissedildiği kuzeydeki atölyelerde titizlikle, el işçiliğiyle üretiliyor. 

Yaratıcı süreç nasıl işliyor? 

Tasarım stüdyomuz ve atölyemiz iç içe geçtiği için gerçek bir tasarımcı-üretici olarak faaliyet gösterebildiğimiz için şanslıyız. Fikirleri çok hızlı bir şekilde prototip haline getirip test edebiliyor, üreticilerimizden gelen geri bildirimlerden faydalanıyor ve bunların tasarımlarımızı etkilemesine izin veriyoruz. Bölgemizin endüstriyel mirasından, demiryollarının ritminden ve tekrarından, Viktorya dönemine ait bir köprünün zarif ama güçlü demir yapısından, çelik bir geminin zarif, hidrodinamik kıvrımlı gövdesinden derin ilham alıyorum.

Ürünlerinizde ne tür renk ve malzemeler kullanıyorsunuz? 

Kuzeydoğu İngiltere'deki bölgemiz iki şey üzerine inşa edildi: kömür ve çelik. Çelik benim kanımda var ve çoğu durumda başvurduğum bir malzeme. Çoğu zaman bu bilinçli bir seçim bile değil, kendime ve ekibime doğal ve uygun gelen bir şey. Ne kadar mütevazı bir malzeme olduğunu ve özel parçalar yaratmak için benzersiz şekillerde işlenebilmesine hayranım. Ayrıca pirinç, bronz, paslanmaz çelik ve Britanya Adaları'nın dört bir yanından gelen bir dizi nadir arduvaz, taş ve mermerle de yoğun bir şekilde çalışıyoruz. 

Introducing "Insulator", the first lighting collection from Novocastrian, both a design studio and an artisan workshop. Inspired by founder Richy Almond's countless train journeys along the East Coast mainline between Newcastle and London, the collection was created from the rhythmic pattern of power lines and the saucer-like pin insulators that adorn them. 

"I believe conceptually the lights are interesting, taking a functional, utilitarian part of the urban landscape that many of us encounter every day, reinterpreting it and elevating it to become something special,"  Almond says of the pendants, sconces and table lamps made from solid brass and pressed glass. 

How many pieces are part of this collection? 

There are four core pieces, a pendant, a table lamp, and two wall lamps. The collection is designed, however, to allow almost endless configurations to be created. 

What is the concept behind the studio? 

NOVOCASTRIAN is a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship, and innovation. It is the embodiment of a vision to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, creating pieces that will stand the test of time. Each NOVOCASTRIAN creation is meticulously hand-crafted in their Northern workshop, where the echoes of an industrial history resonate clearly. They strive to craft heirlooms, to be passed from generation to generation, to be sent out into the word and cherished. 

What is the creative process? 

We are fortunate to be able to operate as a true designer-maker, having our design studio and workshop interwoven. We are able to prototype and test ideas very quickly, benefitting from feedback from our makers and allowing this to influence our designs. I am deeply inspired by the industrial heritage of our region, the rhythm and repetition of the railways, the elegant yet utilitarian iron structure of a Victorian bridge, the graceful, hydrodynamic curving hull of a steel ship. Although our history often provides inspiration, our designs are refined, and forward-thinking. We are continually innovating and exploring new ways to work with metal, which is the backbone of our work. 

What makes NOVOCASTRIAN unique? 

Our connection to the making process and our ability to adjust almost all of our designs to exactly suit our client’s needs. We are also particularly proud of our Special Projects offering, which is reserved for the most extraordinary of commissions. This is where creativity knows no bounds, where the skills of the team are fully showcased. 

Why type of colors and materials do you use in your products and why?

Our home region of North-East England was built on two things: coal and steel. Steel feels to be very much in my blood and is my go-to material in most situations. Often this isn’t even a conscious choice, but something that feels natural and appropriate to myself and the team. I appreciate how humble it is a material, and how it can be treated in unique ways to create special pieces. We also work extensively with brass, bronze, stainless steel, and a range of rare slates, stones and marbles from around the British Isles.
